Geez, how many times (a day) will I change my opinion?! I think I should go back to square one, ie. what I thought of getting initially. The more I think and "evaluate", the more I get indecisive! I'm relieved to hear that the old style blinds are closing well - I might then just get the chains and all. I am planning the 100mm blind - I HOPE they can still install it into the reveal. I really need to avoid having that gap under the blind where the sun can come onto our timber flooring and am concerned that the face-fitting installation will end up with that gap! Helyn and catjim, do you have that little gap along the bottom? I'm thinking if I put the blind onto the wall or architrave, I'll probably have the dreadful "sun gap" - that's our north-east that side, so all morning it will be coming thru Thanks ladies My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Vertical blind for sliding doors 28Sep 14, 2012 7:51 pm Lex, for a 100 mm vertical to fint int he reveal, it needs to be at least 85 mm deep. BTW, my main concern about chainless verticals is that they take a while to stop swinging when slid open or closed. I'm going for chains. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Vertical blind for sliding doors 29Sep 14, 2012 8:39 pm Lex, there is a very small gap at the bottom, underneath the blinds, perhaps 3mm. Otherwise blinds would scrape along the floor/window frame when you opened or shut them Same gap that you usually have with floor length curtains. However the gap is below the bottom door frame - the actual glass of the sliding door is not quite at floor level - I opened blinds slightly and took ground level pic so you can see what I mean http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/house%20pics/DSC00483.jpg There is also a small gap at the top - where the blinds are attached to the blind frame - this doesnt matter on a sliding door or a window if the blinds are outside the window frame - however if you put the blinds inside the window frame there will be a slight slither of sunshine which gets in above the blind See pic below - this is same sliding door featured in all my pics but you see what I mean about the top gap http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/house%20pics/DSC00484.jpg hehehe, how many angles can Helyn possibly photograph her vertical blinds from? Re: Vertical blind for sliding doors 30Sep 15, 2012 10:47 am Thanks to both! Casa, I have about 58-60 mm from the door handle to the face of the architrave. I think they can install it so it sticks out only a little bit (or maybe even flush with the architrave) when the slats are closed. When the slats are tilted, they will be sticking out into the room, past the face of the architrave, by some 4-5cm, but I am fine with that. I didn't want to go for the wall or architrave fitting only because I worry too much about that sun gap at the bottom (and now the top as well! ). Heylin, it's another sunny day here in Paradise , so I just tested the bottom gap and yes, it does look like I would still have it, even if they put it inside reveal . I have no idea how come, but that's how it looks like! I guess because it's north/east, so the sun is not as high yet. Once it gets higher, the sunshine line should disappear. And we also have the door frames fairly thick like you ... I don't know!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, I forgot about my original question!! Should I put the control/pull chains on the same side where the door handle is!?!?!? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Vertical blind for sliding doors 31Sep 15, 2012 11:40 am One reason I really like the chainless blinds is because we have a dog. Before we had airconditioning, since we don't get a lot of blow flies here in summer. I could open the sliding door and leave the blind closed. but slightly rotated. Fresh air could come through the blind gap, the blind movement tended to deter any flies that were about and if the dog went through the blinds there was no broken chain. In our last house we replaced chained blinds with unchained ones when they needed replacing. When the cat decided to roll around under the blind we didn't need to worry any more about him getting tangled in the chain. Re: Vertical blind for sliding doors 33Sep 15, 2012 2:58 pm You made my day, H! Yes, of course I meant 'yours' !!! And what a coincidence, before seeing this, I just read one of my other posts and boy did I write left, right and centre!!! And now this!! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Vertical blind for sliding doors 34Nov 29, 2012 10:02 pm Casa, wondering if you've done your blinds?? And if yes, what did you get? Did you go for Luxaflex? I still haven't done it!!! I got a few people to see, but they all tell me they ONLY do the 89mm or 127mm and their overlap is only 10mm. Since I can't really have 127 slats (because they would be interfering too much with my sheers), I must then have 89 (: ... but not only the slats are so narrow, they overlap by a mere 10mm, so it makes me worry about the numerous light gaps and will it ever properly block out for night privacy?!?!?! (: My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Vertical blind for sliding doors 35Nov 30, 2012 8:41 pm Still haven't done my blinds. But I've selected what I want: Luxaflex 100 mm slats with wand operation and chains at the bottom. One day ... Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Vertical blind for sliding doors 38Dec 03, 2012 5:25 pm Casa, how deep are your window reveals? Will the 100mm blind "interfere" with any sheers you might put at the front? And how much depth of the reveal do you actually have once you substract the handles and any protruding bits?? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Vertical blind for sliding doors 39Dec 03, 2012 8:10 pm My reveals are 85 mm deep. I'm just putting up vertical blinds, so need to worry about sheers, whatever they are. From what I gather the blinds when open have a 5 mm clearance to the back, so stick out 20 mm in the front when fully open. when closed, everything certainly is behind the plane of the wall. I hope I've understood your question correctly. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Vertical blind for sliding doors 40Dec 04, 2012 6:54 am You certainly have! Our reveals are deeper than that! about 11.5 cm. But I'm having sheers (light curtains ) in front of some windows, so wasn't sure how much they would interfere with the blinds, although, when fully open, the 100mm blinds would stick out only about 7mm or less ... but 89mm would not stick out at all, they would be at the plane of plaster, inside the architrave. So I guess I could still fit even the 100mm blinds ... My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... We are looking for sliding doors which are 5 metres tall.
