Further investigations by who? Might just be a filthy waste, stick your arm in and see what you can pull out. Better yet, call a plumber and have them check.

Not sure of the specifics. Just took the old valve off and took it to Reece...and they showed me a replacement. $3.50 and was near closing time...fingers crossed it all settles OK.
