After some investigation, we’ve decided not to use a building firm and rather use a designer and then to get a builder to build our house. The slab is going down next week. While I don't need the recommendation (as I've chosen a builder already) I'd be interested to know if designing your own home comes at a greater cost than going the a project home company like I'm doing. So I know for the next build!! Haha! Also interested to know if this means you might need to get more involved in the building process yourself? Re: a must for all first time home buyers 3Dec 23, 2011 8:09 pm we did the same. got a designer to tweak my plan and make it better and then took it to a local builder (one man guy with help from 2 teams he uses when needed) and he built it and I had HEAPS of input.
