Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Sep 21, 2010 5:00 pm (This is in the tile section also) Where to start. We are currently building our first home and have had a trouble free building experience until now. We took a long time to pick our tiles and ended up with 300x600mm porcelain tiles. They looked great and matched our interior. The tiler started laying them last week while I was at work and didnt get to see them till friday. Wasnt that a suprise. They had laid around 80sqm of the total 95sqm and they look terrible. The tiles themselves are all faulty they have a pretty substantial bow, this is made worse as we wanted them laid in a brick pattern. I wouldnt mind knowing where I stand with this. I had words with the tiler asking why he wouldnt have let me know about the problem. He said he spoke to the builder and was instructed to try and do his best with what he had. I still cant believe 1, that the supposedly A grade tile can be so bad and 2, they were laid. It looks like I am going to have to rip up 95sqm of tiles. Any tips for this. It will just mean a bit of a delay as they rip them up and try again. Re: Terrible tiles, Cant believe they have been laid. 3Sep 21, 2010 6:58 pm Hi dangerjim, very sorry to hear about your tiles. Your dilema has scared me somewhat. I to are having 60 x 60 polished porcelain tiles laid and 150sqmts at that. I have been told that the concrete slab must be exactly level in every direction if not before laying a mix of sand and cement must be screeded over entire slab to make dead level. Just a suggestion but is it your tile that is warped of the slab not level. May I ask which builder you are with. cheers wayne Re: Terrible tiles, Cant believe they have been laid. 7Sep 21, 2010 11:23 pm Unacceptable. Don't know if the fault is with the tiles or if it's just a lazy tiler, or both. You need to speak with your SS before they try and grout them. Judie Re: Terrible tiles, Cant believe they have been laid. 8Sep 22, 2010 8:57 am Two angles to fight here. First there seems to be a fair amount of "lippage" in other words height difference between tiles. The Australian Standard below defines that anything above 2mm is a defect. Secondly, if you believe your tiles are defective, I would ring up the tile place acting anonymously and say "hi, I would like to buy 300x600mm tiles, but I hear in general there could be bows in the tiling. Is this true?" If they say no, no problem, then you have another angle. Otherwise your 2mm difference is your best ammo. If you would like a copy of th AS, PM me. 5.4.6 Tile finish and joints The recommendations for tile finish and joints are as follows: (a) When measured with a straightedge, the finished surface of the tiling should be flat and true to within a tolerance of ±4 mm in 2 m from the required plane. The lippage between two adjacent tiles should not exceed 2 mm. In the case of tiles where the surface has been ground flat, for example polished tiles, the lippage should not exceed 1.5 mm, and for joint widths of 3.0 mm or less the lippage should not exceed 1.0 mm. NOTE: Lippage is inherent in all installation methods and may also be unavoidable due to the tile tolerances. Lippage may also be unavoidable where tiles larger than 150 × 150 mm are graded to a waste outlet, unless transverse cuts are incorporated. Any adjustment of tiles should be made before the initial set of the bedding material takes place. Re: Terrible tiles, Cant believe they have been laid. 9Sep 22, 2010 12:29 pm Cheers for the feedback. Espeically Adam m. It is the tile that is defective not the slab. I am in discussions with the tile shop and builder at the moment. Will keep you all posted. Waiting for the interest rates to go down is also waiting for the building prices to go up, you will likely lose.
