Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Help please - which turf for Gold Coast? 8Aug 21, 2010 7:11 am I've been looking at different turf types to use on the coast as well. I have friends who used the Sir Wal, and it's turned out fantastic for them. However I leaned towards the Empire myself. It's not on the radar at the moment for us as we've got alot of ground works to do. Clarky Re: Help please - which turf for Gold Coast? 9Aug 21, 2010 7:41 pm They will all work out just fine. It is about good soil prep and hardly any fertiliser, or as in my lawns, no fertiliser Use wetting agents regularly and follow them up with molasses, seasol, blood and bone. The rain in Brisies summer should be ample for it's survival. The EZ will take less work than the others. If you have rolled it, then some top dressing with organic composts maybe required to level the area in a few months Re: Help please - which turf for Gold Coast? 10Aug 23, 2010 9:46 pm Thanks Fu - yes has been rolled & nicely watered in with our tank water & with todays fresh rain - a nice soaking drizzle today so very happy! I did mix in some water crystals in as part of the preparation before we laid so that should help long term too. There are a few places that will need a bit of levelling when we are established but overall I am pretty happy with the levels & how it looks freshly laid. This is the first time I have laid a whole lawn from scratch so am really looking forward to watching it all come together. Thanks fot the advice - wouldnt have liked to tackle it without at least a bit of knowledge Cheers Kim Re: Help please - which turf for Gold Coast? 11Aug 24, 2010 12:31 am There has been much study into the use of water crystals and it isn't good from what I have read on them and also from my experience in using them. They have been found to be very efficient at locking away nutrients from plants and responsible for poor root growth and development. In some cases in non-commercial applications it has had negative effects. It's use in professional commercial turf applications is something else all together. Now I personally don't use them. However to be fair they are well suited to being used mixed through potting mix for use in pots. However as I mentioned we are seeing nutrients being locked away from roots. It will be interesting to see how the turf develops over the next 3 to 4 years. The next 12-24 months won't really give an accurate measure of the performance.
