Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 09, 2009 8:42 am Hi there I'm after some opinions on stain colours for my front entrance door. We originally selected a Jarrah stain which would have matched our garage door which was to be a Jarrah timbertone finish. Unfortunately our builder cannot source this door so we've been left with only two options. Either the Cedar or Caoba colours in the B&D range. Caoba http://www.harrisdoors.com.au/images/Products/Coaba.jpg Cedar http://www.harrisdoors.com.au/images/Pr ... e%20up.jpg We're leaning towards the Caoba because we originally wanted a darker red timber and also because we're using Merbau in our portico and also for a front entrance deck so now i'm confused as to which stain is going to suit Caoba best ?? Your help would be much appreciated This is the look we were originally going for with the Jarrah stained front door and Jarrah garage door. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c308/beck80/Hamilton%20252/rebekah.jpg Thanks!! Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 3Aug 09, 2009 11:39 am you know what i think bek - caoba all the way - cedar is way too orange 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 4Aug 09, 2009 12:07 pm Looking at those 2 colours, caoba definately looks closer to jarrah.. so I think you should go with that one too. Love Kristi Living the dream. 4 horsey acres in the country. What's the next project??? Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 5Aug 10, 2009 7:38 am Thanks girls, yes I think Caoba is definitely the best option i'm now just not sure which stain is going to be best for the front door. I noticed yesterday after looking at quite a few display homes with the Caoba garage door that they don't even try and match the front door stain. Some houses looked ok but others didn't. What do you think about the opion of Surfmist ? Remember we're having the front two pillars in the portico covered in stacked stone and we're also having more timber in the portico than what these pictures show. As well as a Merbau deck in the front entry. Too bland, WDYT ?? And thanks so much to D@n for all of your help, I truly appreciate it Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 6Aug 10, 2009 10:35 am Hey bek, I can't see the pic (at work - some pics are blocked ) so i'm going to ask a dumb question - are we talking about a surfmist front door or surfmist garage door? sorry 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 8Aug 10, 2009 2:32 pm Hi Bek... For me, a definite no for the Surfmist garage, I'd go Caoba hands down. We were going to get these for our garage but the budget didn't stretch that far. Your jarrah front doors will go well with it. Though be careful with the stain you pick. We bought a sample piece of our front door (raw pacific maple) and a jarrah stain sample pot to see how they'd come up.....the doors come very bright red ....not the deep red we were after. So we have gone with a Mahogany stain instead as it comes up more like Jarrah from what l see on to the sample board at Bunnings. The sales chick said that if we wanted it to be darker (more mahogany) then we just do extra coats So l'd check what kind of timber your doors will come as, try and grab a sample piece of Caoba, go to Bunnings and look at the sample boards to work out which stain will match it best And if in doubt then buy a piece of raw timber and sample pot and stain it yourself. Good luck! Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 9Aug 10, 2009 4:21 pm thought so bek...i must be a bit weird thorney cuz i think the surfmist garage door would look good bearing in mind that this is coming from someone with a similar render colour and a surfmist garage door i just found a plantation pic that i liked with blue roof tiles and render and did the same as them 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 10Aug 10, 2009 5:14 pm Matching the garage door with with your front door is a must, it looks so much more balanced. I wanted my front door (which I adore it's called Sunburst) to be a feature not my garage. I don't want the gates to be a feature but as Michelle said that will balance it out. So PERSONALLY I do like the garage door matching the house, it's seamless. It may be weird but I have never like the ""welcome to my garage door "" thing. That's just me. Everybody had their own likes and dislikes, that's what makes us human beings, unique and unrepeatable. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 13Aug 11, 2009 9:55 am Thanks everyone for all of your comments. I thought I had made my mind up and decided on the Caoba until yesterday when I saw a place with our exact render colour and they had a Surfmist garage door and it actually looked quite nice and clean and fresh. I guess i'm a little worried because Caoba is actually alot darker than what we originally wanted and as themax said I really don't want our garage door to be the feature. Our main feature is the portico which will have the Merbau timber and stacked stone on it. Plus we're also using Merbau for both side gates which I forgot to mention which would balance out the front door. So what do you think of the Surfmist garage door if we're going with timber side gates ?? Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 14Aug 11, 2009 10:20 am hey bek - did you take a pic of the house? would love to see it i've got my fingers crossed that the surfmist garage door will look good - maybe d@n could even photoshop the merbau gates in for you? 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 15Aug 11, 2009 7:27 pm I do like the Surfmist, understated but clean looking. I think it would look nice especially as you are making a feature of portico. But then the other idea looks good too, I think it depends on what overall scheme you are trying to achieve. Mind you, this is from someone who has yet to decided on her own external colours Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 16Aug 11, 2009 10:07 pm hey all - don't know if this will help but here's some real life (un-altered ) looking pics of a caoba garage door and a surfmist garage door - the caoba is really quite dark 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 17Aug 13, 2009 7:16 am Thanks so much for posting those pics Jess, i'm still undecided. In fact it's doing my head in. So much so that every day I change my mind The girl in colour selections has told me it's not urgent to get back to her so I think i'll go and have a look at more displays on the weekend Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 18Aug 13, 2009 10:41 pm no probs hun - let us know when you decide 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 19Aug 13, 2009 11:07 pm Hmm, l can really see your dilemma now Bek. Perhaps the Caoba may be too much if your having the stackstone, render and merbau portico, plus merbau gates as well. Adding another type of feature (the Caoba) may make the whole fascade too busy looking??? Hope you find some displays that will help you make your decision Re: Stain for front door to match garage door ? 20Aug 15, 2009 8:37 am Yes Thorney I think that's my main problem. I really don't want it to look over done but then if I use the Surfmist I fear that it may look too bland I can't believe how much it's thrown me. Off to look at my display homes today.
