I thought the were sometimes lower to allow for the exhaust fan ducting. Best of both worlds! LOL I never thought of the benefits. The main bathroom in the place I am building upstairs has lower ceilings (2400 vs 2700 elsewhere) but only because it was submitted to town planning that way before I bought the block and plans.
