Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Nov 13, 2008 1:56 pm Hi guys,
Stumbled on to this fabulous forum and need some unbiased info. I have bought a 3 bed unit( around 100+ m2) in melbourne and plan to rip of the carpets and put solid wood timber floors. Was planning to choose Jarrah- Natural feature wood via *** but the horror stories on here puts me off. Now it looks like I will be going for Tassie oak. The timber installer I am talking to is giving me this as his order of work. 1. Store timber within the house for 1 week for it to get climatised( meaning expand/contract based on moisture in house) 2. 3 days to install timber 3. 3-4 days for it to settle down and work out any further expansion of timber 4. Sanding for 1-2 days 5. 1 day break 6. Polishing and 1 day break( 3 loops of this) (The guy said points 4/5/6 should take 1 week altogether but adding all that up takes 10 days or so??? ) Can some one give me clarity on order of work and time taken to do 85 square metre of floors??? I also mainly need to understand the suggested duration that wood needs to be climatised within your home? Also is it best to paint walls/ceiling before or after timber work or even better after timber is installed but before sanding/polishing when there is a 3-4 day break for timber to settle down. Any idea of pros on cons would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance for your sy=uggestions. Cheers, Michael Re: Do I need to Climatise solid wood timber & order of work 2Nov 13, 2008 2:21 pm In my opinion acclimatising is not really necessary, others will swear by it but I cant see the point of it especially in Melbourne. Its not like you are getting flooring straight from the mill so it has already been sitting around for some time. I have laid many floors with no acclimatising and years down the track they are still as good as day 1. Re: Do I need to Climatise solid wood timber & order of work 3Nov 13, 2008 2:28 pm I noticed you're in a block of units? If you haven't already, get approval by strata before you do anything else otherwise you might be made to rip it all up if your neighbour below complains. Re: Do I need to Climatise solid wood timber & order of work 4Nov 13, 2008 3:21 pm Thanks for the reply guys...
Luckily it is block of villa units.. so no one below or above me... Just one wall is shared... Some of my friends were talking about how some wood is shrink wrapped and so will need acclimatisation after purchase.. Is that the case??? the layers also seem to be insisting that acclimitisation should be happenning in the rooms and even storing them in the garage is no good... I can have the wood in the house but my painting tasks would be lot harder then... Just a bit confused.. and would appreciate directions from the people who have done these jobs.. Thanks again guys Re: Do I need to Climatise solid wood timber & order of work 5Nov 13, 2008 3:41 pm I would be interested to hear Dukamayers thoughts on this because he seems very knowledgeable about timbers.
Years ago timber flooring was always used and then covered with carpet. This flooring was never acclimatised and was laid the same day as it was delivered. I have seen many people who have torn up the carpet and polished the flooring underneath and it looks near on perfect (and over 30 years old). have I stumbled on to a real War of worldviews here Would like to hear from folks here on the order of work and when painting is best done?? Thanks Re: Do I need to Climatise solid wood timber & order of work 12Nov 13, 2008 6:19 pm As a seller of timber flooring I always recommend acclimatising for at least one week ( 2 preferrable)
It doesn't matter how long since the flooring has been kiln-dried and machined or been sitting around in storage - it hasn't been sitting in the house its being laid in. I'm also aware that many floors aren't acclimatised prior to laying ( I can understand the builder usually doesn't want to wait) and that most of the time there isn't a drama - I will say about one incident where we supplied select grade blackbutt flooring which came from mid-north coast NSW to us on the south coast, delivered to a site near the water and laid the very next day in a house with lots of glass/sunlight etc. The flooring shrunk enough that it ended up costing the builder around $10,000 to re-do it. Its better to be safe than sorry, especially if the timber has come from a different part of the country. Sorry my response was a non-event It is after all just advice on a forum, not a dictatorship Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 16736 I am new to this forum so please bear with me. An NCAT order was breach by our neighbour regarding a retaining wall dispute. He is the owner of a building company and he… 0 2291 If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 8873 |
