Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Do I need to Climatise solid wood timber & order of work 5Nov 13, 2008 3:41 pm I would be interested to hear Dukamayers thoughts on this because he seems very knowledgeable about timbers.
Years ago timber flooring was always used and then covered with carpet. This flooring was never acclimatised and was laid the same day as it was delivered. I have seen many people who have torn up the carpet and polished the flooring underneath and it looks near on perfect (and over 30 years old). I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. have I stumbled on to a real War of worldviews here Would like to hear from folks here on the order of work and when painting is best done?? Thanks Re: Do I need to Climatise solid wood timber & order of work 12Nov 13, 2008 6:19 pm As a seller of timber flooring I always recommend acclimatising for at least one week ( 2 preferrable)
It doesn't matter how long since the flooring has been kiln-dried and machined or been sitting around in storage - it hasn't been sitting in the house its being laid in. I'm also aware that many floors aren't acclimatised prior to laying ( I can understand the builder usually doesn't want to wait) and that most of the time there isn't a drama - I will say about one incident where we supplied select grade blackbutt flooring which came from mid-north coast NSW to us on the south coast, delivered to a site near the water and laid the very next day in a house with lots of glass/sunlight etc. The flooring shrunk enough that it ended up costing the builder around $10,000 to re-do it. Its better to be safe than sorry, especially if the timber has come from a different part of the country. Sorry my response was a non-event It is after all just advice on a forum, not a dictatorship Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 16915 I am new to this forum so please bear with me.
