Browse Forums Safer Living 1 Feb 02, 2009 2:37 pm we have just settled on on new house and began moving things in over the weekend, whilst moving stuff in the smoke detector went off 4 times and we had to fan a piece of cardboard each time to stop it. The smoke alarm is hardwired and also has a backup battery. Why would it be going off all the time without any smoke at all. We were just moving in boxes, so we weren;t cooking or have candles lit etc. Must mention it's been stinking hot in melbourne (about 40 degrees) Does it sound like a fault in the smoke detector and should i call the builder to replace. We haven't moved in yet and want it fixed so don't get woken up at night. Re: brand new smoke detector faulty?? 2Feb 02, 2009 4:05 pm They can do that if they get plaster dust into them.
basically the dust makes them become supersensitive and I suspect the movement of air as you moved boxxes caused it to go off every now and then. If it's a new house ask for it to be replaced. Re: brand new smoke detector faulty?? 3Feb 15, 2009 11:30 am A few things can set them off.
They should have had a dust jacket on them when you moved in. If it was removed them who knows how long its been exposed to dust and therefore making it sensitive. Also some detectors let the owners know when they are online. E.G: Home owner hits the "hush/test button" and tests the unit. he then walks to the next unit and does the same. The units are interlinked so they both go off together. The home owner then forgets he hit the button when ten minute later it beeps at him twice. he hits the hush button again only for it to go off 10 minutes later again The hush button actually reduces the sensitivity and it set to revert back after ten minute and to beep to let you know. also the two types of alarms as described here. http://chemistry.about.com/cs/howthings ... 71401a.htm Licenced Sparky and Data Cabler If "The Data Guys" is too long to type, TDG will do.
