Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 17, 2022 1:28 pm Hello Everyone, I was wondering if someone could please comment if its building/plumbing compliant in Victoria to have a shower without door i.e. open shower in an Ensuite which - 1. Is not levelled in a way so that water spilled in Ensuite floor flows back to the only floor waste in the shower. 2. Doesn't have any other floor waste for overflow water or water coming out of shower. Thanks Again ! Re: Do we need shower door to comply with AS Standards ? 3Sep 17, 2022 9:27 pm [quote="aussieta":ujuj38mb]sorry . no not compliant needs to be waterproof and fall to waste[/quote:ujuj38mb]. Thanks! The whole ensuite floor has been waterproofed but not with fall towards the shower floor waste. By any chance do you know the reference to this with AS standard ? Just trying to get some technical clauses to support my discussion with builder. Re: Do we need shower door to comply with AS Standards ? 5Sep 18, 2022 2:03 pm strannik Shouldn't it fall to waste regardless of whether there's a door? For the Shower area itself it is falling towards the floor waste. But for the other parts of the Ensuite which also has freestanding bath, basin cabinetry etc the floor doesn't have a floor waste and doesn't fall towards the only floor waste i.e. inside the shower area. Re: Do we need shower door to comply with AS Standards ? 7Sep 18, 2022 5:26 pm This is my understanding. For a Class 1 buildings the BCA through AS 3740 ‘requires’ a floor waste be provided within the shower area. The required fall of the floor, the waterproofing requirements of the floor and the installation of the floor waste are specified in AS 3740. For the area outside of the shower an additional floor waste is not ‘required’ to be provided, nor is one ‘required’ to be provided in other wet areas such as in a laundry or in a WC. Your walk in shower should have a small step down or lip that is the water stop angle that prevents water running back out. Now a minimum standard doesn't necessarily make for best practice and ideally the entire bathroom floor should have been graded back to the shower floor waste but technically I don't think the builder is required to do this or install a second floor waste. I'm happy to be corrected but I'm pretty sure some builders are going this route. Here is a photo from a similar shower. Re: Do we need shower door to comply with AS Standards ? 10Sep 19, 2022 11:29 am i'd definitely put an additional waste in the main area if it's not too late. would be a shame if that bath overflows and it all goes into the bedroom. they are very cheap to add compared to the cost of the problems the absence of one can cause Re: Do we need shower door to comply with AS Standards ? 11Sep 19, 2022 3:55 pm Strangely, it's a Victorian thing not to put a floor waste in. In NSW we put them in as standard. Likewise in WA. Like I said above, just because you don't have to doesn't mean you shouldn't. It just reeks of corner cutting. In NSW we put them in as standard. I did request them to put in and they said it would cost around 2-3K to put the waste as they would need to screed them while ensuite. I would have preferred that as well as one in the laundry. What surprised me that the inspector who came for occupancy permit didn’t even comment on half of the issues I can see at home. I have a private inspector going through this week and will make sure this is highlighted. Re: Do we need shower door to comply with AS Standards ? 16Oct 11, 2022 2:40 pm ozshaz I was going through our building plans, and noticed the following note on the stamped plans from certifiers: WATERPROOFING TO WET AREAS Where there is no shower door the floor within 1500mm of the shower rose must be fully waterproofed and fall minimum 1: 80 to a floor waste. Waterproofing to comply with AS3740-2010. Re: Do we need shower door to comply with AS Standards ? 17Oct 11, 2022 9:22 pm I'm pretty sure you only need a floor waste in the laundry, bathroom and ensuite (other than the shower recess) if there is no overflow on the vanity basin or trough, I did actually find it once, I think it's in the building code, I'll have a look to see if I can find it again, im pretty sure no requirement in the WC for a floor waste but good practice I am trying to find lighting for kitchen, dining areas but looking online, I don’t know if there are specific details I should be looking at to make sure any lights I… 0 6082 thanks guys! yes this is how I've exactly raised it with the builder. still awaiting response. 12 6250 Building Standards; Getting It Right!
