Browse Forums Finishing Touch Re: Feature Walls 2Jul 30, 2008 5:14 pm They do charge alot for their feature walls - it will be very simple just to paint over.
I guess it comes down to what you time is worth - If it were me I'd get them to do it as DH works long hours and any spare time is spent with the kids, ans I'm a terrible painter. Paula Re: Feature Walls 3Jul 30, 2008 5:27 pm I think I'd just pay the money. We have painted a few walls here and the result is far from professional. I find the edges really hard to do so for a brand new home I would prefer to pay to have it done properly. Re: Feature Walls 4Jul 30, 2008 5:37 pm We thought that PD's prices were ridiculous too but in the end it was just easier to get them to do it. We probably wouldn't have done it even if we planned to - our "garden" is still a jungle after a year.
Our painter from PD told us that their prices are too high and we should have asked him to do it privately after handover. Of course we couldn't because it was already organised but perhaps you could save a bit by getting someone else to do it. Re: Feature Walls 5Jul 30, 2008 5:39 pm Any darker colours will quite possibly require a special dark undercoat to ensure the final result is smooth and even - otherwise you will have problems with the light coloured base showing through.
We had this problem on an orange feature wall in our studio - ended up putting many more coats on than we should have needed to get the final finish even. Cheers, Earl Re: Feature Walls 6Jul 30, 2008 5:41 pm Thank-you for all your input guys.
I think you are right and it will just be easier to get them to do it, we would probably not get around to it either, and the colours we want are quite dark so I want it to look nice....might sneak it into the budget My karma ran over your dogma Re: Feature Walls 7Jul 30, 2008 5:57 pm Agree with Strumer...on the old house we had a feature wall of Dulux Seductress - a very deep burgundy - on an off white wall. Took about four coats to get the depth of color.
The edges were tricky we had an outside edge (corner) but DW was extremely patient and with good masking came up with a terrific result. The painters prices are expensive but it depends on your level of interest in the job. DW likes painting because she feels it's a very satisfying job, and she's fussy with her workmanship....or workwomanship...! mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Feature Walls 8Jul 30, 2008 6:04 pm Strumer Any darker colours will quite possibly require a special dark undercoat to ensure the final result is smooth and even - otherwise you will have problems with the light coloured base showing through. Cheers, Earl Normally…..if you are buying the paint from a good store, they will tell you if you need the special undercoat for dark colours! All those painting Murray Red…..be warned this is one of those colours! My painter put a blue undercoat on to get the depth of the Murray Red. bel, other than the deep based paints…..its fine to paint over your flow colour, it will just be an extra undercoat, which sometimes I feel is lacking in some homes. Do it yourself, you will save money!!! It's times like this I wish my dad was still here , he did all the painting in my parents home plus the feature walls in our current home. He was such a handy man, and did such an awesome job - as for payment, a carton of crownies did the trick My karma ran over your dogma Re: Feature Walls 10Jul 30, 2008 6:15 pm haywgl Thanks Mich and TDL. Our painter gave us his card today and said to give him a call if we want any other painting done. He's done a fantastic job so we might take him up on the offer. He put 4 coats on our walls (including undercoat). Re: Feature Walls 14Jul 31, 2008 10:45 pm I was thinking of that Dy... I think I will see how our budget is going...if it looks ok at tender I'll add a few walls, otherwise I will organise something after tender
Just on the topic what colour do people think would suit our 'pool room'? It will basically have a pool table (possibly red or blue felt) and all of DH's sporting stuff (framed jumpers, footys) team photos, newspaper shots, trophies etc..we are needing to pick a colour to go with all of this....keep in mind his footy stuff is mostly gold and brown Any suggestions for a feature wall for this room would be great My karma ran over your dogma Re: Feature Walls 15Aug 01, 2008 6:50 am Hi Bel,
I think one feature wall of the Wild Fig in the pool room would look stunning. I think all you memorabillia would suit this colour. I also would have some sort of feature lighting on this wall to really highlight all the pictures. Mrs B Re: Feature Walls 17Aug 01, 2008 8:33 am haywgl I was thinking of that Dy... Mrs B - i was thinking of the wild fig for this room too. I like the idea of lighting on the walls, Paula is right though there would probably be 3 walls full of stuff, but maybe I could put two wall light on each wall Thanks for your help everyone My karma ran over your dogma hmmm id assume youll get hit with the "natural product therefore variation in colour etc" excuse.
