Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: Portofino Benchtops 2Dec 30, 2010 9:27 pm I have a portofino benchtop in polar white. They are considered "solid surface", check out Corian on google I think they invented the stuff. I am happy with the overall look but have found that it will stain easily, such as coffee, tea the usual suspects. In saying this it will clean off usually using gumption. My benchtop is newly installed and is already scratched. In the new year I will be discussing this with the manufacturer as I cannot see how I have scratched this myself and suspect it was already either at time of manufacture or at installation. I will post how I get on with the manufacturer. Re: Portofino Benchtops 3Mar 27, 2011 10:54 am hi suz78 - I wondered how you got on with the manufacturer about that portofino benchtop ? I am about to put in a new kitchen and am leaning towards the Portofino product but I can't seem to find very much information on the web. My vendor (wholesale kitchens) says that the poduct is by Dupont but they don't seem top mention it by that product name on their website. Any ideas anyone ? Re: Portofino Benchtops 4Apr 07, 2011 9:45 pm Hi ajb1010 - I am considering a solid acrylic benchtop - corian or the like. I was really confused but today I found a solid acrylic benctop specialist company (in Bayswater Melbourne) and they stock corian, staron, hi-macs and hanex. These are all solid acrylics and they claim there is no difference in quality. i have noticed that some kitchen companies have different brand names - ie Freedom offers their own product called Portofino but don't tell you who manufactures this. According to the solid acrylic specialist place these products are not acrylic, but polyester (who knows what that means???) My first quote for corian through a cabinet maker was $10k (I have 5.5m2 of benchtop) - going direct to the benchtop specialist I was given a quote of $7k for corian, but on $5k for a very similar colour in Hanex. They claim Hamex is really cost effective as it has been bought out by a new supplier and they are trying to break in the market. I would be wary going for a product like Portofino that you cannot find any info about on the internet - I'm pretty sure DuPont don't make it! Re: Portofino Benchtops 5Jul 22, 2011 5:26 pm I'm fairly sure that Portofino is just the company brand or private label if you prefer. If you ask the company you are dealing with you should find that the material is made by well a well renowned multi national that has a lot of years worth of experience in this field. Re: Portofino Benchtops 6Aug 23, 2011 7:30 pm Hi, I know this post is a month later than the last one but I have been trying to research 'Portofino" too. I was also told by Freedom that its made by Dupont. After some thought (I'd had my heart set on caesar stone or similar) I decided to go & price the manafactured stone options. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that for our 7 metres of bench tops & island it was cheaper to go with caesar stone, smart stone or quantum quartz than the quote for portofino - the only difference being the 40mm thickness as opposed to 52mm portofino. The quote I'm going with came out to $5,600 as opposed to $9,400 for portofino, I also think the manafactured stone options look better too but its all about personal taste! Re: Portofino Benchtops 7Oct 06, 2011 10:18 pm I have just installed a new kitchen and decided to go with the portofino benchtop. The kitchen has only been in use a few days. I like the look and the feel of the portofino but it appears to stain very easily and as a result i am now terrified to let anything drop onto the benchtop. The fellow who installed the kitchen told me you could not place hot items on it either or use harsh cleaning products. Apparently the stains can be sanded off and you can replace damaged areas of the benchtop without showing the join. Also the benchtop appears to be 52mm thick but not all of the thickness is actually the portofino.
