Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 03, 2010 5:49 pm Hi all - hoping you can give us some advice. We are laying solid timber floors and we need to remove the existing slate tiles form our entrance. It is only a small area, about 2x3 mtrs at the most. We have hired a jack hammer type machine and it has taken the top layer off, but it has left the bottom layer which is glued to the sub floor with a black rubber type substance. Does anyone have any ideas? Re: HELP! How do you remove slate tiles? 2Jan 04, 2010 8:21 am You will need a jack hammer with the blade that way you can scrap the glue residue off or a sharp shovel. How do you remove slate tiles? 7Jan 04, 2010 10:17 am You could try a concrete grinder. They are used in the final stages of tile removal or t level out a small hump in a sub-floor. They have 4 or 5 ceramic blocks in them and grind it down. Not sure if you have too much for this achine to work. It's more of a clean up the dregs at the end kind of a machine. I think kennards and the like hire them out. Re: HELP! How do you remove slate tiles? 9Jan 04, 2010 12:21 pm xylene - acetone - min turps??? How do you remove slate tiles? 10Jan 04, 2010 10:54 pm Not sure if that would work. I have 3 different tile remval contractors that do work for me and they stick to the Jack hammer and concrete grinder. There is no magic bullet that I know of. (if I a wrong I would love to know!) Re: HELP! Never seen a tile installed on anything other than an ac sheet or straight up mortar mixture / or cement. Re: HELP! How do you remove slate tiles? 16Jan 05, 2010 1:21 am Be aware, black coloured flexible floor adhesives are often a product called blackjack and can contain asbestos. If you are going to dry grind make sure you use a respirator or similar. Also there is a form of diamond tooling available which are called PCD's. They will clean up this type of coating quite easily and without alot of mess with a vac of course. Try a Kennards Concrete Care store as opposed to a Kennards general hire as they specialize in this type of tooling on their hire grinders. Try water as simple as it sounds along with a sharp blade scraper with a long handle that you can get from Bunnings. Hope this helps.. Cheers Slugger Re: HELP! How do you remove slate tiles? 17Jan 05, 2010 1:50 pm Ouch - how certain are you about the aspestous(sorry can't spell) ? We are simply chipping away at the leftovers after the jack hammer - it has left the black rubber glue - but it maybe ok to put the timber on top of. thanks for all your advice. Re: HELP! How do you remove slate tiles? 18Jan 05, 2010 2:20 pm How old? (Asbestos) possible but unlikely. The sheet membrane that was also called blackjack and very sticky may have had asbestos in it. But that is for roofs. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: HELP! How do you remove slate tiles? 20Jan 05, 2010 7:38 pm I can assure you that Blackjack had been used as an adhesive for floors for many many years, I cannot comment on it's use on roofs though. It is generally used on carpet and vinyl jobs but occasionally used for tiles or similar. I only give advice on matters that I know to be fact and not speculation. I am in the trade and come accross this type of adhesive on a regular basis. Just take care that's all, it's better to be safe than sorry. Best of luck Cheers Slugger I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top. 1 4180 To put anything over slate you will need to put self level compound over the entire area as slate various in thickness and is very un even.
