Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 9Dec 22, 2009 7:32 am Thanks T&V, I'm ok with profiling/hurdling for a slab setout... That part's easy once the block is level! I'm lucky enough that I don't have any "minimum" level as I'm on a 5 acres block.... The house pad alone looks like being 50m x 25m cut/fill operation... The will be a 2m deep cut, and 1.5m fill though, so I want to get it fairly right for the drott operator... One thing I've noticed, as I'm sure you have T&V, is that as an Owner Builder, if you have done your research, have the job prepared, and are prepared to get involved, then tradies are much more helpful, accomodating, tend to produce a better result, and sometimes cheaper! I know in my job, if I'm dealing with someone who seems like they have an interest, who wants to learn, has high standards, and is willing to give it a go, then I tend to enjoy my job more and produce a better result! Hence being such a big operation, why I want to peg it out first, then stand back and take a "dreamy" look at the location, heights etc before finally nailing in the location on the site plan... I've got the luxury of time on my side so I can play with things a little to position the house as I want it! Being on 5 acres, and not having minimum levels means I can adjust "on-the-run" to when the drott is onsite... I'f I think we need more batter, then I can... I'm not going to have to export fill! Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 10Dec 24, 2009 12:34 am Hi Chuth 77, IMO if u have 2m cut & 1.5m fill, i'd be having the "split" or "neutral ground" level at 1/2 way cross the pad. reason i say this is becos the 2m that u cut will compact to about 1.5m. if ur on 5 arcres, r u going to have septic tanks? cos again u do need to know the entry level to the tank to work out the minimum grade of sewer line. if u know all this then u r well on ur way. cheers tony. Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 11Dec 28, 2009 4:39 pm You can installed profiles if you wish, but they will more than likely be in the way of the operator when he is trying to cut the site. what they generally do is put external pegs in 1 metre from the slab boundaries and cut then batter back. If you are adamant that you want to take control and do the profiles yourself then I would wait until after site cut Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 12Dec 28, 2009 6:27 pm Yeah, I'm not worried after pputting in profile hurdles for a slab as yet... It's the cut and fill profiles that I want to get sorted.... Being that its a 2:1 slope cut, and fill batter, I know where these will start and stop, so I've pegged these out to begin with... I've set up some datum points for the cut finished level, and aprt from that I'll jsut wing it with the drott operator! Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! PM me your email. I have a build excavation calculator you can use based on your plans to double check what your builder is telling you.
