Battery powered. It works ok, but i'm not sure i'd recommend it. The petrol types are probably more efficient although they're noisier and smokey which is what I wanted to avoid. Re: The best whipper snipper/line trimmer/brush cutter?? 7Dec 26, 2009 8:36 pm At the beginning of 2009 I bought an Echo GT22 for $259 (petrol driven). I think I might have got a small reduction for trading in a Ryobi (electric). Frankly I would have given it away!! I did some internet searches and (along with Stihl) Echo seemed to be well regarded and used by some council workers. It is so nice to use, easy to start and easy to change the line. I still haven't quite got the knack of how to use it without it taking off and marking the bottom of the fence, but I think that is probably more to do with me than the Echo as it is not happening so often! Re: The best whipper snipper/line trimmer/brush cutter?? 8Dec 27, 2009 9:21 am I've got a Kaaz/Mitsubishi Unit - 2 Stroke.. they are avail from Bunnings for around the $400 mark - maybe less now.. It's japanese made, so alot better for parts than the Homelite etc Chinese rubbish.. also had the biggest line feed in it's class I also recommend using a manual line feeder as bump feeders are just painful, I used to be a Landscaper and all I would use was Stihl products.. but I purchased this unit on a whim and it's been great. Exhausts are supposed to be regulated for noise suppression much like Chainsaws (76db) which is quiet enough for you to speak over.. but that never seems to last.. best advice I can give is to ensure that you can get parts support which is something that the Chinese brands generally lack. If you're a domestic user and you maintain your equipment it will last you for years and years. All the best with it. YAY!!! my first post cheers Matty Re: The best whipper snipper/line trimmer/brush cutter?? 9Dec 28, 2009 7:03 am 4 stroke honda is hard to beat, no smoke, easy to start, light and powerful Re: The best whipper snipper/line trimmer/brush cutter?? 10Dec 29, 2009 1:29 am the renovators I've got a Kaaz/Mitsubishi Unit - 2 Stroke.. they are avail from Bunnings for around the $400 mark - maybe less now.. Re: The best whipper snipper/line trimmer/brush cutter?? 11Dec 29, 2009 1:41 am I spent some time reading through a few on line forums including threads on this by people working in the garden maintenance area. There were a couple of brands that stood out, but in the end I went for a four stroke Honda. Starts very easily, is relatively quiet, much less pollution than a two stroke, and is used by workers in this area. It was more expensive than the Bunnings selection, but after suffering from a cheap brush cutter, the extra expense is definitely worth while. I did find it very worthwhile ringing around to get a good price. Re: The best whipper snipper/line trimmer/brush cutter?? 12Dec 30, 2009 7:46 pm I bought a cheap (under $200) from bunnings 9 years ago that is still going very strong on my 5 acre property - it gets plenty of heavy duty brush cutting work, it is a yard master (or something like that). But what I really wanted to suggest - (and this is the best thing I ever did as someone who uses these tools very regularly) - is buy one of these things or something similar: http://www.supersealer.net.au/welcome/page1.php. I can got for about 2 hours of fair dinkum hard going brush cutting before I need to change the line. Whereas with the old spool type systems I was always changing it and using a heap more line. And even when you do need to change the line, it takes about 10 sec. Re: The best whipper snipper/line trimmer/brush cutter?? 13Apr 12, 2010 11:24 am Melrich I have a petrol driven McCullough and have found it to be excellent, easy to use and powerful enough for anything I have had to do. From memory it cost me about $230. The next step up would be to a Stihl or something like that and it is a pretty big step (price wise). Don't buy one with a curved shaft. They are made like that because they are cheaper to make like taht but they will not last as long as a straight shaft nor are they as easy to use. Pay a bit moe and get a straight shaft. I ended up getting at McCullough 2 stroke.About $200 It's great. No smoke, starts everytime and it cuts great. Can't fault it Re: The best whipper snipper/line trimmer/brush cutter?? 14Apr 12, 2010 11:36 am We have a petrol line trimmer (whipper snipper) but I don't like it and am thinking that an (electric) edger might be better.
