After getting prices back on our own design, we decided we had to go back out into the display home world for another look. We stumbled upon Ownit Homes who amazingly had the perfect house with all our ‘must haves’ (after a few tweaks of course). In comparison to other builders, the Ownit Homes cost/m2 on the base house was on the lower side and they had quite a few inclusions that tipped the costs further in their favour. The salesperson at the display was helpful and spent quite a few hours with us over a number of days patiently writing down/pricing our initial 50+ ‘tweaks’ (which I think by the time the contract was signed was 90+ items ) We paid our deposit at end-April and started the long wait for our draft plans to be made available. I think we waited about 7-8 weeks, which seemed like forever at the time. It took another 7-8 weeks to sort out final plans and colour selection and we had the contract finally signed mid-August. It was frustrating at the time to have to wait so long for everything to be processed, but after reading some people’s comments on the pre-contract administration of their builders and with the beauty of hindsight, I realise that our builder was just being thorough and that I am impatient. Construction started really quickly during mid September and it has now been 35 days since they cut and filled the site (who’s counting?? ) and all of our upper roof is complete with the lower one being finished this week. Our bricks are programmed to be complete by end October, so we should be getting lock-up shortly after that! Our house is 2-storey ~420m2 (incl garage, alfresco, balconies, etc), so we think that they are hurtling along at a great pace to have completed so much in such a short amount of time. As with everything, things aren’t always perfect and I have spent a few frustrated moments being cranky at minor things not being co-ordinated in documents and of silly issues with communication. But in saying that, I am in the construction industry and I think my expectations are much higher than a lot of others. In all honesty, overall Ownit Homes have been fantastic up to date and have been really approachable from their sales staff to their directors. I realise that was long-winded (I love a good chat), but I thought we should share our thoughts on this great Brisbane based company. I will keep everyone updated on our progress. Re: Ownit Homes - our experience thus far.... 11May 26, 2010 8:44 pm Hi bradgan Are you building with Ownit Homes too? How is your experience so far? Hope you're enjoying the building process. The OP has gone The latch and striker are definitely not aligned but there was no point trying to help the OP understand that. Hence the reason they are no longer with us. 12 6067 So it seems like they just take on a lot of projects to get the cashflow for their own builds. COULDN'T AGREE MORE 14 45881 3 51940 |
