My Bro has an island about that size, & has 2 lights which are about 400mm across in diameter. No way could he do 3 with that style of light with out it looking too crowded or busy. So I would say if time permits, choose your fitting first, then decide whetehr 2 or 3 are right for the area. We are thinking of putting a spin on pendants in the bedroom and was wandering how painful it will to get installed after the house is complete, or is it better to specify now to the builder ???? * Are we there yet ? Demolition has come and gone ! yippeeee..hang on that was months ago !! come on Mr Builder, dig a hole at least Finaly ! Hole Dug ! well done darren 20/06/2010. Slab is down ! Framing is complete 20/10/2010 we are progressing like a snail on heat - excited and determined but very very slow Steveo Re: Lights over Island Bench 14May 11, 2009 3:56 pm We probably went a bit over board!!. We ended up having 4 downlights over the bench (3m long bench). We just followed the display home. The bench will be our place that we do all the prep work so want to ensure it's bright enough. The remaining ktichen has 3 lights that are dimmable so if we want a "mood" light we can! The other reason we went for 4 is our benchtop is black so it's going to be quite dark. Just get battens installed where you want your pendants, then you can add the light fittings later. There are quite a few DIY pendants available now (check out Bunnings), but if you don't fancy any of those, you'll need an electrician to install them. It should be a cheap job, with the batten and switch already in place. We used a few DIY feature lights, and the rest we had an electrician friend come over and install. Re: Lights over Island Bench 16May 11, 2009 8:09 pm My bench is just over two metres and I have two. I don't know why I have two or even when I made the decision about it, but I have two. It looks fine to me, but then again I have too many other things to distract me about this build so haven't thought too much about the lights. For my kitchen though I think three might be too busy considering the bulkheads and the plaster void to the right. In saying that three would probably have worked, but I have two.
