Helyn I was only joking about it growing potatoes the one in the earlier post was only referred to as a potato jasmine, surely a novice like myself could not be expected to know that this is the same as a potato creeper !! Re: Best Climber 23Apr 05, 2009 1:09 pm Fu Manchu Helyn I had one called a potato jasmine with tiny white flowers, not sure if that is the same as the star Jasmine other posters have mentioned? That one is related to potatoes and is also called spud vine / potato creeper/ potato vine. Can't kill 'em with a rock. (I didn't know either ) Re: Best Climber 24Apr 05, 2009 6:52 pm ok but it didn't say whether or not it grew potatoes so my question was still valid "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Re: Best Climber 25Apr 06, 2009 12:08 am No It belongs to the solanacea family which includes deadly night shade, night scented jasmine, the spud vine, datura, angles trumpet (brugmansia), chillis and egg plants to name a few : Re: Best Climber 26Apr 06, 2009 1:58 pm
deadly night shade
Ohh that sounds like my kinda plant If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. It loves the dry crappy summers and can go sometime without water. Also survives the cold here... They also look great and have a tropical look about them. Come in nice colours also, only prob is they can have nasty thorns (but im sure there is thornless varieties???).. Another climber is the Wisteria- although im not sure it copes very well with frosts etc??? Re: Best Climber 28Apr 12, 2009 6:52 pm Wisteria thrives in Melbourne. TOO well. Avoid it like the plague, unless you're prepared for a lot of work keeping it in check. It's beautiful, but invasive and mine even grew back after I poisoned it. I would like to just second that....Wisteria is the "Beast!" once it gets in you got it for life, one minute you think you have it under control the next it starts popping up somewhere new. Steer clear of Wisteria. Re: Best Climber 30Apr 14, 2009 11:42 am Agreed on that. It won't give the tropical look they are after either. Wisteria just need the right place to be. Not ideal in a suburban garden in most circumstances. Any is it safe to plant on retaining walls? Will it cause any issues with the retaining wall structure? 4 11455 Hi im new to this forum. What a terrific site!
