Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 04, 2023 11:43 am Hi All! Our builder has just sent through the working drawings from the cabinet maker for our custom kitchen. We have noticed that the drawer depths on our 750mm deep bench are only 500mm deep. We queried this with the builder, this is their response: "The cabinetmaker is working through all the items, and I am hoping to have this back with all pricing on Monday. In the meantime, they have advised that if you would like to increase the depth of the drawers above standard (500mm), then they need to upgrade to much more expensive components, as the standard runner system isn’t manufactured deeper than 500mm. So, the following pricing would apply: 12x Drawers up to 650 deep will cost an extra $2,892 (incl GST) This would be the 3x 4 drawer banks along the back wall of the Kitchen - the drawer under the Oven can only go to 600mm deep, due to the higher side runners required only being made that deep. 4x Drawers up to 600 deep will cost an extra $656 (incl GST) This would be the drawer under the oven, and 3x drawers under and to the left of the Dishwasher (the drawer under the sink cannot be made deeper, due to the plumbing) If you would like to go ahead with the drawer upgrade, please advise and I will draft a variation." We are shocked that this was not included in the quote we received through the builder over a year ago. It has never been asked or mentioned, and this is the first time we have seen a detailed drawing to notice it. Is it normal that drawer depths stay at 500mm when bench depths are increased? Thanks for any advice Re: Kitchen Quote - What should be included? 3Aug 18, 2023 11:47 pm then they need to upgrade to much more expensive components, as the standard runner system isn’t manufactured deeper than 500mm. what is their standard brand? are the standard something from China, or Hettich, Blum, Grass. Deeper drawers cost more. Re: Kitchen Quote - What should be included? 4Nov 08, 2023 6:23 pm hey there! 😊 so, it’s kinda common for standard drawer depths to be around 500mm since most cabinets use this size to fit the usual runners – it's like the one-size-fits-all in the kitchen world. but when you've got a bench that's 750mm deep, I totally get why you'd expect the drawers to match up. it’s a bummer this wasn't flagged earlier! 😕usually, the builders or designers should give you a heads-up if the drawers won’t be as deep as the bench. it's like ordering a large pizza and getting a medium – just doesn’t feel right, ya know? the extra cost for deeper drawers is a bit of a shocker, especially if your heart’s set on that sleek, flush look. 💸it sounds like your builder might’ve dropped the ball by not mentioning this from the get-go. that said, upgrading to those fancy runners for the deeper drawers does sound pretty steep. it's kinda like paying extra for those high-end sneakers when the standard ones would do – except here, you can’t just settle if you need that extra space. 🤷before making a decision, maybe have a chat with the cabinet maker too? getting the lowdown directly could give you a better sense of whether it’s worth the splurge. 🗣️ and if you're feeling cornered by the extra cost, it's fair to push back a bit and see if there’s a middle ground. negotiation is key! 👌just remember, it’s your kitchen, your rules. if deeper drawers are a must-have, it’s important to get what you signed up for. but if the budget’s tight, sometimes you've gotta weigh up if the extra inches are worth the extra dollars. 💰 hope this helps, and fingers crossed it all works out! 🤞 I was being kind to the builder. With the amount charged for the upgrade the builder is probably charging closer to 100% margin.
