Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 17, 2020 7:39 pm Hi everyone, We're in the process of planing a knockdown and rebuild. My elderly parents can no longer keep up with their home and so we have made the decision for them to move in with us with the new build. We are having issues with planning for two kitchens as it is our wish to have their 'unit' be a part of the whole structure and not a temporary 'granny flat' away from the house. Council's view is that once there are two 'dwellings', we'd need to sub-divide, which is not possible in our block. Planning a second kitchen is what constitutes the second dwelling from their view. Curious if anyone else has had this issue and if there were any creative solutions to the problem? Or if any other builders/designers could offer a fresh perspective? I'm quite frustrated that the ocuncil is completely okay with us building an entire, separate flat, but not okay with having a comfortable, joined area of a house for my parents who will need my fmaily nearby for care as the years go on! Would appreciate any insight/help! TIA Re: Two dwellings under one roof? 3Dec 17, 2020 8:42 pm Room with the plumbing in place and electrics that can be fitted out post build as a kitchen - eg a "home office" that has a sink and a bathroom off of it and a bedroom and turn the home office into the kitchen/living area. Agree it seems very silly and does not support what we need to be looking at an option in the future elderly parents living with us or children that can't afford to leave or come back. Re: Two dwellings under one roof? 4Dec 18, 2020 8:25 am You cant do an attached granny flat? That’s what weve done, no issues. We have had to do a complete seperate accomodation that’s not accessible, through the house, but easily accessible from the outside area (that we will eventually add a pergola to so we can have undercover access. Our neighbours have done a games room with wet bar, then had a guest room and bathroom off it. They originally had a n island bench as part of the wet bar and they were told to remove it, as it had to be one continuous bench they plan to add it in afterwards. Re: Two dwellings under one roof? 6Dec 19, 2020 3:55 am Hey mate, Unless you want a secondary dwelling which is stipulated to be a ancillary dwelling to the primary house, captured on the same title and used by extended family, you will be seeking a dual occupancy. A dual occupancy is a subdivision but the dwellings are subdivided under a Community Titling arrangement (with a body corp) rather than a freehold subdivision.
