Now tackling the HUGE task of the Garden- viewtopic.php?f=31&t=14782 Re: Noggins??? 4Mar 23, 2009 12:06 pm I'd try to get the tradies to do it, or you can do it yourself. I'll be having noggins for all my accessories, heavy or not. This the second rental I've been in where toilet roll holders and towel rails are coming out of the wall. It's a pain the bum. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Noggins??? 6Mar 23, 2009 1:08 pm we nailed in some noggins a couple weeks ago... just did it when they weren't there... just be neat, and clean up after yourself and they shouldn't mind. doesn't affect them at all, they'll just plaster over it. and try and make sure you don't put them where electrical will go. Building first home in Melbourne - Hilton NBG 24E (changed dramatically) inspection done... just waiting now for finalization!!!!!!! Re: Noggins??? 7Mar 23, 2009 5:26 pm Shouldn't worry sparkies either, jut lay them on their side. MicTan, Its not at all hard to fit a couple of noggins. Just cut a piece of 70 x 35 (should be plenty of offcuts ****** around or get a couple of lengths from your local hardware) so it fits tightly between 2 studs. It should be tight enough that you have to give it a tap with a hammer to level it up. Get some 3 - 4 inch nails and nail through the studs from the outside in to the ends of the noggins. Are the chippies still on site? They'd knock a couple of noggins in in about 30 seconds if you ask nicely. Your plumber would probably do it if you wanted but its not really their thing. Re: Noggins??? 8Mar 30, 2009 9:59 pm I added extra noggins everywhere for TV's, towel rails, etc. Just make sure that you mark the concrete with crayon or something so that they know where to place the rails, etc. I just wrote something like 900 and marked the area where the timber was. Re: Noggins??? 9Mar 30, 2009 10:22 pm dont panic, as your builder will not specify where are your noggins in the work drawings anyway. most of us in the forum ( as far as i know) just ask the carpenter (via the site super) to put them on on site. cost? 1 slab crown lager or 2 depending on how many trees you need to chop. DIY noggins? its posible but i believe your site super will prefer his carpenter to do it. ( i am not that handy anyway) Re: Noggins??? 10Mar 31, 2009 10:59 pm Im a first time builder but not totally new to doing small jobs. With the Noggins for toilet roll holder etc. do you put them in the same way as the other noggins 35mm or turn them over and have the 70mm or even 90mm facing into the plaster. Also how do you know where on the plan & building to locate where you roll holder will go, same for towle rail. Re: Noggins??? 11Jun 23, 2009 10:21 am I was just looking for tips on the "noggin" question and found this thread. We are renting the house next door to our site so I have plenty of opportunities to do them myself and there is lots of off cuts ****** around to use, I just have a some of questions on the BEST way to do it. * Is it best to drill and screw or will nails suffice ? * Should I wait for the sparkies to finish their wiring? * I would like to put several up for where we will hang photos in heavy frames, is it possible to go overboard or is it like powerpoints (you can NEVER have too many)? * I noticed the nails they use in the nail guns have sharp points, I have always "blunted" the points of nails to avoid splitting the timber has someone got a comment on this? * I know it is probably a very personal thing but is there a general "rule of thumb" for heights i.e. for photo frames 1.8mtr / towel rails/toilet roll holder 800mm etc etc? * If I were to put a noggin in the bathroom where I think the towel rail should be will whoever fits it just put it where they think it's best or is this something that is discussed with your SS closer to the fitting time? Sorry for all the questions at once. Vid Re: Noggins??? 12Jun 23, 2009 11:40 am vid * Is it best to drill and screw or will nails suffice ? Vid Just do the same as what has already been done. I think nails are standard though vid * Should I wait for the sparkies to finish their wiring?Vid No - try and do it b4 the sparkies attend. If they need to run wires, they will then drill a hole in the noggin (much better they do it than yourself) vid * I would like to put several up for where we will hang photos in heavy frames, is it possible to go overboard or is it like powerpoints (you can NEVER have too many)? I wouldn't go overboard. Remember the lockup chippy has to straighten all the walls and noggins everywhere may not make this an easy task. vid * I know it is probably a very personal thing but is there a general "rule of thumb" for heights i.e. for photo frames 1.8mtr / towel rails/toilet roll holder 800mm etc etc? I think that I went 900mm for towel rails but can't really remember (I had a qualified chippy with a nailgun with me when I completed) vid * If I were to put a noggin in the bathroom where I think the towel rail should be will whoever fits it just put it where they think it's best or is this something that is discussed with your SS closer to the fitting time? Get yourself a red crayon and write on the concrete the height and the position of the noggins - they will then know where to place (also mark on your own plans) I'm not any expert but I hope this helps. Re: Noggins??? 13Jun 23, 2009 12:53 pm Remember to put noggins where you want to put robe hooks etc. We bought a stud finder last week and have used it at least a dozen times already. And don't count on the studs being in the spots where you want to hang things - noggins in before plaster is definitely the better way to go. Fi has moved in!!
