Re: Wood Plastic Composite decking 2Nov 06, 2019 7:47 pm Still does. Every one of the composite plastic timber-looking decking I've seen looks semi OK at first but after a year or so looks more plasticky. The best one I saw was actually white. It looked like - not surprisingly - a timber deck that had been painted white. I liked it and it really suited the Hamptons style house. Stewie Re: Wood Plastic Composite decking 3Nov 06, 2019 8:16 pm Hi Stewie D , yes I had a look at composite decking IRL, and it doesn’t look great and hot underfoot in summer. I wonder if the white painted one you saw was fibre cement decking, like Hardieboard. I’ve seen it painted white and it looks good (I’ve got a hamptons style build). Ideally I would love to use Accoya acetylated wood, as it’s sustainable, maintenance free and is beautiful real timber. But pricey! Re: Wood Plastic Composite decking 4Nov 17, 2019 3:56 pm I struggled over the decision for a while then ended up choosing a good quality composite, as my deck is low to the ground and I was concerned that spotted gum would cup.... and the maintenance was not really something I wanted to do or have to arrange annually. The greying off wasn’t my concern as I like the natural timber grey look and I chose a grey composite. My deck is mostly covered and east facing so the temperature in afternoon sun wasn’t something that I was too concerned about. With samples I noted what would be expected, the darker the colour the hotter the sample was It’s been less than a year so I can’t yet report on longevity. They must have thought I was spamming and deleted my last post. The above deck is a display deck in Brisbane built in 2013, and photos taken in 2020. It doesn't get walked on that much, but is in full weather. The below photos are of an outdoor food court (Also in Brisvegas). A high traffic area that has furniture being dragged around on it all day. Built in 2016, and photos taken in 2019. Hope this helps! It was one of the decking composites I looked at when I was making decisions and exploring fading, scratching etc. Some commercial installations had millboard decking. I also kept some samples on my garden bed exposed to all weather elements and moisture from below, for what ended up being > 9 months while I procrastinated. I had stickers on them to see if fading would be visible. I scratched them with keys etc to see how easily they scratched and how this looked. Only Merbau showed significant wear and cracking. The minimal maintenance won me over. Re: Wood Plastic Composite decking 8Jan 17, 2020 7:42 am Hmm. Thanks for the photos. Must admit it has been a while since I looked at any of these comp decking materials. They seem to have improved a lot in the last few years and the only ones I have seen in the past were of the cheap and nasty variety. Quite a few builders ( like me ) who I know and who have installed timber decking in their own homes over the years all reckon they wouldn't do it again because of the maintenance issues. The hot Australian sun is pretty harsh on timber even when well maintained ie regular cleaning, sanding and re-coating and even then the colour of the timber fades severely in only a few years. Stewie Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 13551 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair At a bit of a loss on this one - we're thinking the original owners never removed the protective laminate covers from their kitchen cabinets after installation and in the… 0 7364 yeah i couldnt picture it issue either, but i could clearly picture what they were doing wrong haha 2 5591 |
