It you wanted, you could screw the decking boards directly to the slab, although having a bit of depth would improve the aesthetic. No way would I screw decking directly into a slab, the ensuing trapped moisture would ensure endless mould, dampness and eventually rotting deck. I’ve never seen a deck without joists, not saying it couldn’t be done that way, but unless you will never get water on it or expose it to the elements, I wouldn’t recommend it. Decking new Alfresco 7May 31, 2018 1:34 pm gillybean the ensuing trapped moisture would ensure endless mould, dampness and eventually rotting deck. I agree it’s not ideal, but you could use steel battens. As long as the drainage is sound, that would work. Besides, that area is mostly under cover. Personally, I would tile that area and put a deck out into the garden if I wanted some wood under my feet. Re: Decking new Alfresco 8May 31, 2018 3:21 pm GillyBean is on the money. Arcadelt just talking nonsense. Ideally you'd want something to hold your joists off the concrete, so add that to the joist width and deck thickness. More height underneath your deck the better, to give it better airflow. Re: Decking new Alfresco 9May 31, 2018 4:22 pm dulie Arcadelt just talking nonsense. Trent Smith, If you find that the advice provided by all these well intentioned members cannot be followed because your builder can’t or won’t change the step down, get back to me and we can discuss some of my nonsense to achieve what you wanted. Re: Decking new Alfresco 10May 31, 2018 4:32 pm I have to agree with not attaching decking directly to an alfresco slab. The moisture trapped within it over time will shorten its lifespan and you will be ripping it up in no time due to rot. There are a number of solutions to decking over a concrete alfresco slab, however, not a lot of them will fit within 50mm of height between alfresco slab height and your internal finished floor height. As a suggestion, but by no means the only or best solution could be adjustable decking pedestals to place your joists on. You need to remember that an alfresco slab is not the most accurate of surfaces and it may have a decent gradient towards the outside edge. You will need more height that 50mm for any solution you choose so if its not too late I'd be talking to the builder and have a larger difference between internal and alfresco slabs. Its better to have height to fill than no height to work with at all. my 2 cents. Re: Decking new Alfresco 11Jun 30, 2018 1:09 pm We are now deciding whether to continue with decking or go timber look tiling. Timber look tiling is alot cheaper and would not need the maintenance that you need with timber. something like the below. As you mentioned this would be cheaper than the deck. Cheers ! Re: Decking new Alfresco 16Jul 20, 2018 2:21 pm We had this debate with our sales consultant and at our final selections appointment we changed from a 50mm to a 70mm drop, it cost us $250 because another engineers report was needed. They wouldn't let us have the drop any more than 70mm. It might come to us having to sand down the timbers right next to the door frame so we can slide it under the door frame. We found out that Dechellis rebate the sliding doors but couldn't tell us by how much so hopefully we can make 70mm work. Thanks for this very useful, we are going to end up tiling it now ☺ Re: Decking new Alfresco 18Oct 08, 2018 6:44 am Not sure if anyone has requested this on their build but is it possible to have a no step down to alfresco? We are looking to tile our alfresco too but I think it looks better if the floor level is the same as the house? We are looking to tile our alfresco too but I think it looks better if the floor level is the same as the house? Thanks I think that's what everyone's been talking about above - you'd need to rebate the door tracks, and then either have your alfresco slab at the same height as your internal slab to then tile it, or do this 100mm lower to allow clearance to put the decking down. Definitely can do it though, and it looks a treat Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Decking new Alfresco 20Oct 08, 2018 4:46 pm KingTaco Melbournevic Not sure if anyone has requested this on their build but is it possible to have a no step down to alfresco? Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 13522 Use a product like Equisol's Vitalise to clean the deck then coat with a penetrating timber oil. It will look 10 years younger and add value to your home.
