Browse Forums Windows & Doors Re: Double glazing as an upgrade 2Mar 04, 2016 10:06 pm Get in touch with window specialist for double glazing specs you are after. Builders generally don't care about detailed specs for double glazing and provide whatever their suppliers supply. Start talking to builders about low-e glass etc. and they will appear as if they have not heard anything about this at all and you are the first client asking for such details. Re: Double glazing as an upgrade 3Mar 05, 2016 9:43 am Personally I'd just go for standard DG Aluminium windows with either the air gap or more expensive argon. Once you start looking at thermal break windows etc in either the UPVC or timber the price skyrockets from what I've seen. Effective yes but pretty expensive. I'd put that extra money towards the walls and ceiling. I see in one of your other posts that you are looking at reverse BV? Stewie Re: Double glazing as an upgrade 4Mar 05, 2016 11:59 am I'll be pretty adamant about the frames being thermally broken as it makes a huge difference to the ratings...no point paying for you beaut glass only to have the frame transferring heat and cold. Yeah Stewie I've had the reverse brick to two walls run through the first rate5 software and it made a pretty significant difference to the heating and cooling load in those areas...not sure what the cost will be but I'm going to ask for it to be costed by the builder...they probably won't want to do it though..so I'm expecting to be shocked lol Re: Double glazing as an upgrade 5Mar 05, 2016 2:42 pm Anything out of the ordinary will cost you a lot more - walls, roofs, windows etc as a lot of guys don't want to know about it and if they get the job they will get big bucks for the build. What R-rating are you looking at for the walls ? Stewie Re: Double glazing as an upgrade 6Mar 05, 2016 5:03 pm Our house is sitting on 7 stars atm and that's with r2.7 in the walls and 4.1 in the ceiling...not too bad...but it's also with thermally broken aluminium windows. Out tender has double glazing with Qlon acoustic seals and all windows changed to awning type so that's all been factored in...the thermal break adds more u value and argon does too...wideline have no wers ratings stated anywhere which concerns me! Re: Double glazing as an upgrade 7Mar 05, 2016 5:07 pm Should say not a huge leap on insulation...tender includes r2.2 to walls and 3.5 to ceilings so that shouldn't cost too much to up...but I'll call the window supplier myself on Monday to find out exactly what they've quoted...I've asked a few times but the cso for the builder never answers...they look at me like I have two heads when I say that thermal comfort is our biggest priority! If I was asking for a butlers pantry they'd not bat an eyelid! Re: Double glazing as an upgrade 8Mar 05, 2016 5:18 pm Stewie the biggest factor that improved our star rating was pushing our walls out to be square...which cost bugger all! Once we did that our house 'free running' was 5.1 stars which is already above the average for nsw...mental! Re: Double glazing as an upgrade 9Mar 05, 2016 5:37 pm Deejay, I went for double thermally broken aluminium with hidden hinges and 6.4-16-6.4 tilt and turn and I am so happy I did. They are amazing, best of all it was only 10K cost after taking the credit for the standard windows. The painters were there on a 42 degrees day and with no electricity or fans they said the house was very pleasant inside. I am very happy I went DG and would use the same company in a heartbeat. Re: Double glazing as an upgrade 10Mar 05, 2016 6:05 pm Wow Aussie! Can you pm me the company and their location pls! That's a huge gap...is it argon or air filled? Did you use low e on either pane? Also with the tilt and turn what screens if any fit them? Thinking of having them in our meals area where it's a long skinny window Re: Double glazing as an upgrade 11Mar 05, 2016 6:08 pm I'm so glad someone else sees the benefit of DG! My husband stills scratches his head and our friends think I'm nuts paying extra for it...cept my mate who works at Viridian! I know that they all see the sense once the house is built Re: Double glazing as an upgrade 12Mar 06, 2016 6:49 am Quote: Stewie the biggest factor that improved our star rating was pushing our walls out to be square...which cost bugger all! If I was asking for a butlers pantry they'd not bat an eyelid! Our triple glazed windows with low-e glass and argon gas can achieve u value of just 0.8, which, while still inferior to your walls, would offer you the kind of thermal insulation all your friends and neighbours would be jealous of! At the moment, triple glazing is on a winter special and costs just $150 per window under 2.2 sq m to upgrade from double glazing while doubling the performance as measured by the u-value. This represents exceptional value for money and ultimate in comfort: thermal, security, and acoustic. I paid $8600 for 4mm with 6mm argon gap and 4mm is plain toughened glass awning Windows with apparently qlon acoustic seals. U value 4.1 and shgco 0.50 I wanted the gap to be at least 12mm but this is what I have received. They are being installed with the frame this week wish I had received your reply a lot sooner This is one of the reasons I decided to go overseas for my double glazed windows.
