Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 14, 2016 12:33 am Has anyone here used ekodeck? How's it? This is what we are planning to lay down on our front verandah. We want maintenance-free deck. I know it might only take a few hours of work but these little jobs do add up. I love the look of real timber but we just don't want to keep working on it. We just pulled and poison some nasty grass in our front yard. I told my partner that we have to do our research on how to keep them off permanently after we finished our house cos I would not want to keep doing it. If you want total maintenance free, opt for the darkest colour eg. Slate grey as this colour will not show marks, dust, pot marks as easy as the colour Redwood. This is a proviso you are not concerned about the sheer heat of full exposed flooring to the sun which will make it as hot as walking on the road. Otherwise, installation is relatively easy, try keep to complete length boards so you don’t have warp or shrinkage issues at butt joins. Ekodeck decking feedback 3Feb 19, 2016 11:04 am Ours will be OK with the heat as firstly, we will have the ceiling of our verandah/deck insulated and plastered. Secondly, it only gets sun in the morning and will be in the shade by lunchtime. I hear you about the heat issue as it is the same with fake grass. Our neighbour has it (I guess it's in the front yard it's just for aesthetic purposes) and it gets real hot. You wouldn't want a dog walk on it for starters. Here are some pictures I took from the ekodeck brochure (excuse that it looks like a mad dog's breakfast). Thanks for your suggestion about getting the grey but we are actually leaning towards the Red Rock or the other brown colours. Firstly it gets hot. And I mean really hot. So hot that I could barely pick up a piece that had been sitting in the sun at 34 degrees. It also holds the heat for hours so if you have it on a deck where the sun has hit it, it will radiate heat for a long time after that. Secondly it is a composite plastic wood. If you get a sharp object and scratch it you will leave a white-ish scratch mark similar to scratching plastic and as you can't oil or stain it the mark will be there forever. Imagine what it would look like after a few years. Then there is the weight. It is very heavy. I put some down on the swim deck of my house boat and had to rip it up half way through the job as it was causing the deck to dip into the water. The weight of the timber for the swim deck area 6m x 2m was 500kg (half a ton). I threw out the Ekodeck and purchased Merbau. Hope this helps. Re: Ekodeck decking feedback 5Mar 08, 2016 12:06 am Oh pooh, that's disappointing. I'm interested in it too. Though maybe okay for my intent -- screening and a gate Ekodeck decking feedback 6Mar 10, 2016 5:55 pm I think it would be better for screening (don't have to walk on it) and have seen it used successfully for this purpose. Also I understand from my own research the quality varies between brands - there's Ekodek knock offs which aren't as good. We are looking at use in verandahs - elevated and none of the decks are really close to the ground. The upper verandah is above the lower one. The verandah is 9m long, so we will have joints, but don't really like the breaker arrangement plus will need an extra rafter to support this breaker/picture frame arrangement and this will be visible from underneath. Looking at the website can only see one elevated verandah and seems to be a steel frame and they used a breaker board plus top fix system. Also, the wooden rafters will be a seal tape on top, so thermal movement may walk or wear these away over time. So, would love to hear your comments over the performance since your post. Cheers We are very happy with it. I just would like to mention that most of our verandah area apart from the ramp is undercover. So we don’t have issues with heat. Cos it can get hot. There are discussions about composite decking here. viewtopic.php?f=17&t=102833 You may want to check it out. The wastage is minimum 5% as per their website, however, depending on deck length and with picture board arrangement, it can be as high as 15%, this adds a fair bit to the effective cost per m2 which needs to be considered, especially with the premium boards. If you have two decks one under the other like we do, then with the breaker board, you will need addition joists or similar to support the boards, this will be visible from underneath ie you won't see evenly spaced joists. Static electricity is an issue in dry months.. Others have mentioned the heat. Yet to experience this but we are arranged for sun in the winter only and none in summer. Yet to move in and assess scratch resistance. Overall, it's expensive and comes with cons. Cheers James Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 13502 Use a product like Equisol's Vitalise to clean the deck then coat with a penetrating timber oil. It will look 10 years younger and add value to your home.
