Both look good, I always preferred the timber decking though. Also brings the flooring up so there's no step down to the alfresco which I think is a bonus.

agree with Snyde's comments.
Also with a timber deck, you can easily extend it out a couple of meters to create a larger deck.
Other benefits : you can DIY and should be cheaper than pavers.
But if one is keen on the look of pavers, its a different story.

Also I've seen cracking in the pavers on a fresh slab... dust and debris has nowhere to go on tiles but falls nicely between decking boards!

need to workout which timber to go with:

1. merbau (everyone has this).
2. Ironbark
3. black butt
4. spotted gum

That's where I'm at. I don't like the red of merbau personally but i haven't looked into ironbark or blackbutt. I'll investigate!

Since I have seen (M&A fellow member) paved alfresco photos, this is seriously bugging my mind which way to go, timber decking or paving?

We ofcourse love the paving and this photo looks awesome. With the wear and tear and the rough use of the alfresco, always thought paving is the better option.

By the way, have you heard of Lanai? We wanted to cover the Alfresco and found that Fairhaven gives the lanai option and found some fantastic photos in the thread. Scroll to the bottom and you will find the photos

Although I think they will both look good, more so because of your DIY skills

I think timber decking will work better for that area you've shown in your pretty diagram (personal preference)..
Sorry but the only color I know is Merbau for this..will go have s look at the others !!

Hi guys... may I ask for your opinions about venting steam from ensuite/bathroom into the roof area? Would this be a big problem or nothing to worry about with metal roof?

Merbau stain is what we have all around the house. If we go with merbau decking it would be stained in same to match.

But with the rest of Aussie hard wood, would prefer to go with clear protective layer or just oil to have luxury of natural wood.

Yeah, merbau is very safe but it's just common everyone is using exact same timber.

I'm not in rush this time, so still looking for ideas.

Agree with mirz. I asked my independent inspector about this too because I realised too late our rangehood was also venting in there. He said it's fine because of the whirlybirds and also some of our soffits under the eaves have vents too. So our roof space is well ventilated, and it's not a problem.

I think Henley adds Whirly birds to suit the size of your house/ roof ! We wanted to add one in for $300 (for metal roof) but our Sales Con advised us that these get added for a lesser price in the end...luckily didn't have to pay and got 2 for free
