Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 17, 2015 11:54 am Hi everyone, We have just had the slab laid on our Metricon two story home, so we are well past the variation stage, and I am having a minor panic about our ceiling heights. My husband and I didn't elect to upgrade our ceiling heights, both of us are on the short side and we made the error of assuming the the standard height would be fine. We are having 2.55m for ground floor (8.5 foot?) and 2.40m upstairs. Now, I am looking around the Internet and discovering that it seems EVERYONE upgrades the ceiling height and so rather than having average ceiling heights, we have comparatively low ceilings. So, anyone else stick with the standard heights? If you did, has it been ok? Thanks Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 2Jul 17, 2015 12:44 pm I'm building a new house .we upgraded to 2.7 ceiling height and It looks and feels beautiful. It gives ur home a spacious look . I feel u should have at least upgraded your ground floor to higher ceilings. Sorry don't want to demoralize you but even standard height may look alright. Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 3Jul 17, 2015 3:15 pm Try not to stress if the decision has already been made! You are already in between standard and higher ceilings at 2.55 on the ground floor (upper floor doesn't seem to be increased typically). As a short person also, I think you will be happy with the 2.55. Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 4Jul 17, 2015 3:34 pm We are short people as well, went with 2.55 on both levels though. When you upgrade to 2.7 and higher, you will then need to consider taller doors, taller windows, taller kitchen cabinets, even wider skirtings, architraves and cornices etc so that the room proportions look ok. All extra dollars. Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 5Jul 17, 2015 5:44 pm I'm with go for updated the ceiling heights for sure. You don't need to increase door heights necessarily. You may choose to put your heads higher but you may not and moving them (here in WA anyway with our builder) didn't cost any extra. Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 8Jul 17, 2015 8:39 pm Hi, Thanks for all the reassurance guys. Andy - I agree - I think I should have opted for higher ceilings but sadly have realised this too late - great that you're happy with yours. I'm trying not to stress about it too much as it can't be changed, so I really just needed to hear from anyone who had lived with the lower ceilings - to tell me all would be fine. For those who were able to do just that for me - much appreciated, just what I needed, - thank you. Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 9Jul 18, 2015 9:06 am Hi Don't be sad. It's not end of the world. Even I went with laminate benchtops and tiles for kitchen splashback. It all depends what you really want and can justify the cost . Even I forgot lot of things which I now regret but I'm still happy with the end result. Look around the world where millions of people don't even have a roof over their heads. We are lucky to have one whether it's higher or lower doesn't really matter. Does it. Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 10Jul 18, 2015 9:18 am Yes, you're quite right Andy, definitely a first world problem. Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 11Nov 02, 2015 9:47 pm 2.55 is nice I think it looks fine That's what we have Re: Metricon build - anyone NOT upgrade ceiling heights 12Nov 02, 2015 11:03 pm Two rental properties I lived in a few years back had ceilings heights of 2.4 m. The first house was probably built in the early 1990s and it was cramped which I guess made the lower ceilings more obvious. Then about 6 years ago I lived in an Ausbuild house which also had lower ceilings. But the layout was more spacious so the 2.4 metre ceilings weren't as obvious. I guess it depends on the layout and also the colours of the walls, cabinetry etc. My current house has 2.55 metre ceilings and honestly I don't notice the difference. The difference between 2.4 and 2.55 or 2.55 and 2.70 isn't much. Don't stress about 15 cm. You won't feel claustrophobic. what's the rationale on this? In my mind, the risk weepholes mitigate isn't solved by acrylic render. 9 28794 Many thanks for your reply. Yes I am concerned with the work done.
