Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 02, 2008 3:26 pm Ok..we're getting quotes in for an extension and a large deck. We're trying to keep costs to a minimum but obviously it all needs to be practical too.
We dont want the deck to be really dark so ideally would like to have a bit of light coming through - we'd also like to keep it shaded though...decisions! So...what would you recommend?? Cost wise aswell as for practicality? Thanks all Rach xxxx Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 2Dec 02, 2008 4:04 pm What about a cloth shade sail? Should be much cheaper than both, provides cover and lets in light. Don't know much about them but might do the trick. Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 3Dec 02, 2008 5:51 pm Im not going to be much help Im afraid because there are many different types of Laserlite etc. All different colours, that give varying light/heat transmissions. It depends on your site as how much sunlight you get. Whether you have a pitched or flat roof etc.
Because of its complexities why not shop around at local pergola companies or local housing and check out/ask what they have used? Its relatively expensive so people often have mostly colourbond with an acrylic sheet (or two) over the doors and windows for light transmission. Shade sails are OK but (if it ever rains again) they are not an all-seasons covering and IF you are in a very windy area they require extremely solid anchorage. Arfur Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 4Dec 02, 2008 7:58 pm We had Laserlite roofing over our deck at our old place. It faced north-east , and while we didn't want to lose the winter sun, we needed a roof to keep off the rain, so that the area was usable for more of the year.
We chose a tinted product (it was a grey shade from memory) and it didn't cause much loss of light, but the difference in temperature underneath it, compared to out in the open, was quite a few degrees. It also blocked something like 99% of UV. We found it a great roofing material for our purposes. We had shade cloth originally, and that helped with the heat factor, but of course it was no help when it rained. Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 5Dec 02, 2008 8:01 pm Go for the better Laserlite 'Apollo' range. The standard '2000' range lets in light and heat whilst the Apollo lets in light whilst blocking out heat. This sounds ideal...dont suppose you can point me in the direction of a website with it can you?? I'm putting a letter together to give to the builder and want to include examples of the items so he knows exactly what I mean. Thanks everyone else for your replies too - very helpful as always Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 7Dec 02, 2008 8:05 pm I did both….colorbond and Laserlite, or something similar….probably plastic!
Its great, just enough light and cool in the heat. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Excellent thanks Luke! Hadn't noticed that kek had already stated that it was Laserlite they'd used - brilliant thank you. I'll go looking for a website now. Is Lasterlite an expensive option??? Its great, just enough light and cool in the heat. Yep thats what I was thinking of having...a strip of colorbond then perspex (or maybe thats what laserlite is??). Now I've heard about the tinted laserlite though I'm really liking that idea! Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 10Dec 02, 2008 8:30 pm Laserlite is some kind of plastic (Polycarb?) and it's perfect inset between Colorbond sheets. We did that on our shed roof - it was a cheap way to install skylights!
Laserlite's website should have the info you want: http://www.laserlite.com.au/residential/selection_process.asp Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 12Dec 02, 2008 8:40 pm havingfun good question Bad website! where are all the pictures of what it will look like?? I don't want the technical stuff, just the pretty pictures http://www.laserlite.com.au/residential ... apollo.asp there you go Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 13Dec 03, 2008 8:18 am We have been thinking along the same lines as we will have only a small courtyard area, we want to create a roof for rainy weather but not block out too much sun.
We recently came across a great idea in the PD displays lately. They have put in the traditional laserlite pergola, but between the roof beams and the laserlite, they have put in bamboo type sheets! It looks great, a balinese type look, whilst giving you some shade (but not making it dark) and protection for both you and the bamboo from the rain. I think it would be quite cost effective too, perhaps you wouldn't have to go with a laserlite that is too expensive. Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 14Dec 03, 2008 8:55 am sounds interesting arabella, do you have a pic? or remember which PD display?
Like others we want to, shade our north-facing alfresco, but don't want to lose light from the rooms the alfresco surrounds (kitchen, laundry, study). Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 15Dec 03, 2008 9:01 am I will try to find a pic for you...
We saw this at a few PD displays.. The Rise in Tarneit, Brimbank Gardens and possibly some of the Caroline Springs ones too. Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 16Dec 03, 2008 9:18 am Sorry pics are too hard for me

Or what? 17Dec 03, 2008 9:23 am This is a similar idea (I think it was a Henley display), but they've used timber slats instead of bamboo. I have a collection of "ideas" photos from display home visits.

In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 10871 You should pressure clean your roof first and make sure the paint you buy also is anti mould. 4 21274 |
