We placed over $100,000 on our "Powerpass" account, as we owner built. We did not have an ABN, nor were we asked to supply one. This started with the frame and trusses and continued. By and large the prices that we received from Bunnings were cheaper than what I could find elsewhere. Whist out major spending is completed, we still use this for day to day purchases. Ok, so what % discounts did you get? Yes, I find Bunnings very competitive, but we are talking discount versus someone without a powerpass card not versus what mitre 10 charge Re: Trade Discounts and ABN 13Feb 04, 2015 7:58 pm Firstly I must thank you for doubting my veracity in what discount we received from Bunnings as opposed to other Retailers. This is truly appreciated. Depending on the product we were looking for, we searched through a range of retailers. This included many varied suppliers, including some I had used in previous builds. We then put it on Bunnings with the cheapest price I could find through our Powerpass account manager. With the odd exception they nearly always bettered the price I had found by a reasonable margin, or at least matched it. Depending on the product we received up to 40% off some of the prices I had been able to source. On one we received only a 10% reduction. This unfortunately only amounted to a $3K saving. Pretty poor really. As an owner Builder we sourced every product we could at the cheapest prices we could. That was how we saved. So amc33 if you really wish to doubt my word that we obtained good discounts on the items we purchased from Bunnings, drive over here and I will show you the invoices.!! Actually I agree that Bunnings have great prices. I don't know how you think I somehow have doubted this. I suggest you have a re read of the proposed question. The question was how much does Bunnings discount THEIR OWN PRICES for waving the powerpass not how much cheaper are Bunnings than your nearest Quote elsewhere. I will happily drive to see your invoices If you have a bunnings receipt that has a discount of 40% noted on it. I don't want to see a bunnings versus some other supplier receipt because that's not what this is about Re: Trade Discounts and ABN 15Feb 05, 2015 5:11 pm I will try again You say, "I suggest you have a re read of the proposed question. The question was how much does Bunnings discount THEIR OWN PRICES for waving the powerpass not how much cheaper are Bunnings than your nearest Quote elsewhere." The original question was "My question is regarding whether most suppliers give Owner Builders a trade discount or do I need to apply for an ABN?" As you can see Bunnings discounting their own prices is not mentioned, perhaps you should re-read the question. You have further said "ABN or not you will have to pre pay for everything." Incorrect. At no stage when we built did we prepay for any items. They were all on a thirty day account, and we did not have a ABN. You say " I don't know how you think I somehow have doubted this." You have stated "Ok, so what % discounts did you get?" Our discount rate varied as I have said. As we used quotes to achieve our prices discounts are not stated, just the quote number on the invoice. If you wish to drive and see these please feel free. I do have to question why I have to document to you chapter and verse what discount I received on a certain item. I have said what approx benefit I have received from Bunnings. Since you doubt me, you are effectively calling me a liar. Are you sure this is what you wish to say? Since you wish to take a totally antagonistic viewpoint, I won't be answering further comments from yourself, as it is obviously a waste of time. I just ask that any comment you make about my veracity be accurate. We don't have a big box moving hardware store where we live or even one close by that made it economical to have goods shipped in. We worked with local suppliers and once the know your an owner builder, they are happy to work with you. Mostly I dealt with quote per job and don't have a fixed "trade" price. I'd just walk in with my shopping list and they would normally email me a quote the same day. For any adhoc purchases, the hardware store provided be a tradie card ( screws, odd sticks of timber, paslode nails and gas etc). They also offered a credit account if you are willing to set one up and can provide references. This was a bit of a catch 22 for me as I'm not in the building industry , nor am I self employed. My hardware store and bathroom/kitchen/tile/plumbing places all gave up with me doing small transactions in the end and just gave me a credit account once I proved I was a good payer. Now when I walk if for anything, i get it at a trade price automatically. We have since finished building, but we still have all of our trade accounts in place. Overall the people I dealt with were very friendly and professional. Like others say, it all comes down to volume as to the discounts you will see. Good luck with your build.
