Browse Forums Outdoor Living Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 3Feb 15, 2014 11:53 am Narrowing down to Ekodeck now, we didn't like the look of Futurewood, but did find another product called Duradeck (which is changing its name to Permatimber) which had less colour options and is hollow but has a neater fixing system. Both Duradeck and Ekodeck are able to be sanded to remove scratches, and as you said geesman, modwood cant be. Anyone got any feedback on these products? Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 4Feb 15, 2014 3:28 pm I haven't heard of or seen duradeck. I've already bought a single piece of ekodeck and I think I will stick with it. I had a look at futurewood today. Yes not really fond of the pattern on it but I do like the hidden fastening system associated with it. It is a least 20 per length more expensive than ekodeck as well. With ekodeck I will use the camo fasteners. I think they will be good on this, however they are not suited to timber because of their side fastening and timbers tendency to warp. Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 5Feb 16, 2014 2:26 pm Are you building your deck right now? We are a few months off, would love to hear/see how it goes for you. Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 6Feb 16, 2014 7:32 pm I just started my eco deck. I started playing around with the fixing first to see how I am going to finish it. I really like the solid look of using ss screws and having them show. I found that you need to countersink and pre drill each screw hole. I compared with merbau and found that merbau doesn't need countersinking with the screws I have. If you dont countersink the ecodeck a raised ring around the screw forms. Interesting I was able to sand it out very easily. However you find the a small part of the screen becomes covered or hidden in the product. So I think I will countersinking the screws. Other than that I am so far happy with the product. It will be interesting to see how it handles time. Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 7Mar 15, 2014 6:55 pm I've received some pricing and samples for trex and millboard products. Both really beautiful, but very expensive. I did get info on duradeck and it was a bit cheaper but fewer options. We had a trex deck back in the states and loved it. It held up very well through much snow, rain & sun. Would love to use it on our new build here but don't think it's in our budget. I'll check out ekodeck.. Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 8Mar 15, 2014 11:47 pm We built a fernery and use ekodeck screening. Loved it. I have built jarrah, pine and batu decks in the past. Even though screening is a bit different to a deck I will definitely be using a composite for my next deck. I pre drilled but did not countersink, using stainless steel screws with a small head and had no need to countersink. Then just using a sharp chisel you can scrape the small ring that forms around the head right off. This worked really well for the rough sawn look of the Ekodeck screen. Not so sure how effective it would be on the smoother deck profile board. Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 9Mar 21, 2014 10:13 am I have been looking at composite decking and getting samples from all over the place trying to decide what is the best and also most cost effective. I do love the trex but it is very exxy... I had a bunch of samples sent to me from Oztuff which i really liked. Has anyone used their products before? Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 10Sep 20, 2014 8:03 am Digging this post up to see if anyone has feedback on composite decking some time on? There are that many brands out there now, all with similar durability claims, that it would be great to get some real world feedback! Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 11Sep 20, 2014 1:16 pm mtchye if I can offer some advice, if you are looking at using any of the timber colours then dont. If it gets any sun on it they get so hot you cant walk on them without shoes. I did a large deck around a pool for some clients who insisted on using it, they would throw water on it to make the 6' journey from the pool. Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 12Sep 21, 2014 10:44 am So my other half has done our porch and just a bit of finishing off of the patio and hopefully do the bench seat next week, all in the ekodeck in the wide grey boards, using the camo tool mainly, with a few predrilled top screws in difficult to access planks at the edges (as per ChargerWA above, just scrape off the excess material at the end, which worked a treat). He used tile spaces to get them layed out, and overall I think he found the process fairly straight forward. He found the ekodeck and camo tool video's useful too. Overall we are very happy though it is only 2 months old. 2 comments though is that it is quite soft and scratches easily (though this can be sanded to fix if wanted but we don't feel the need as yet), and it gets quite noticeable watermarks if it gets wet, which washes off if the whole deck is hosed down. I will post some photos once the job is finished. Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 14Nov 30, 2014 1:53 pm Sorry, we have been a bit slack on taking and posting photos, here are a couple that I have on hand, of our Ekodeck in grey. Deck finished, starting a gabion wall garden bed adjacent And finishing the wall seating with a narrower width board of the same product and colour I cant tell you exact costs, as we did a porch as well and I have lost track of all the costs. It was $63 per length (5.4m) of decking, plus screws, plus tools. Maybe around $2500 for 3.2x6.5m deck, 1.5x2m porch, and the seat. The support framework underneath was done by our builder, so that would be extra. Re: Composite decking options- Modwood vs Timbertech vs Ekod 15Sep 29, 2017 7:59 am Done a couple of merbau decks but just love the hardi deck I did, plus accepted the fact not to make it look like timber and used the recommendation to paint it with heavy duty driveway paint. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 13480 Use a product like Equisol's Vitalise to clean the deck then coat with a penetrating timber oil. It will look 10 years younger and add value to your home.
