Browse Forums Laundry 1 Jul 30, 2013 11:49 am I know I should be posting this in the laundry section - but it seems awfully quiet in there so thought I'd post in here quickly. We will be getting our laundry fitted out in the coming weeks, and we have never had a dryer - but - we are going to allow space for a wall-mounted dryer above the washing machine (at cupboard height, not sitting directly on top). I have read bits and pieces about dryers having to have vents and all sorts of things. I know you can get new fangled dryers these days that contain the condensation - or reduce the condensation (my technical explanation) but quite honestly, Im not mad about the look of them (silly, huh?), and not sure we can afford one as they are more expensive. So for now, we will probably end up with the 'older style'. Our laundry does have a window. But can someone please advise if any other special requirements are involved to have a dryer in the laundry? And does the window have to be open every time you use the dryer? Of course I can ask the guy in the shop but sometimes I like to do my own research outside of the actual salesperson. And I want to make sure we make allowances before the laundry is fitted as it might not be until next winter that we bother buying/installing the dryer. TIA HHCIB Re: A question re dryers..... 2Jul 30, 2013 12:34 pm If it is not vented to the outside via duct work then you WILL get loads of moisture in the room. To counter this you need plenty of ventilation. I've used a ceiling extractor fan previously which did the job just fine. Open windows, open door both will help with ventilation. If you don't have sufficient ventilation you'll have water running down the walls. 2 Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. Re: A question re dryers..... 3Jul 30, 2013 5:06 pm Thanks Bluesuede..... I wonder if I should consider moving the dryer up to next to the wall/window.... a) so that it is close to the window for ventilation, and b) so that I could vent it to the outside wall if really necessary. I did think of having it this way in one of my plans (because the other bonus is that it means I can leave my plumbing for the laundry tub where it is and not have to move it). Only problem with it is that the depth of the dryer means it will jut out into the actual window space - blocking off some of the window. Not a huge issue because it's not a doorway - and the window opens from the bottom outwards.... but still, not the most 'visually neat' way of having it . At the moment I have it at the opposite end of that same wall (a whole 1050mm away ) so that it is next to my 600 tall cabinet, therefore not appearing to intrude 'as much' into the room. Another benefit of swapping it closer to the window will mean I can leave laundry sink where it is and cut out moving the plumbing . Would having the dryer jut out into the window space by about 150-170mm look too odd, do you think?? HHCIB Re: A question re dryers..... 4Jul 30, 2013 6:18 pm I would put the dryer next to an external wall if possible. We had the local handyman put in an external vent and it cost $120, best way to go. Regards, Grumbles Re: A question re dryers..... 5Jul 31, 2013 10:43 pm Our dryer is mounted up to as high as possible, to allow work space beneath - which looks fine as the bottom of it is minimally lower than the overhead cupboards in there too, but is damn hard to reach the stuff inside at the back of it (it could be that I'm just short). Easy to shove it in, harder to pull it out. This is one thing I didn't think of when wall-mounting it. We also have a ceiling fan in the laundry that we run when the dryer is on and we leave the internal door into the laundry ajar to allow a bit of air pull from the hallway into the laundry and up into the extractor fan. We find the fan with the door closed produces too much moisture in the room (wet floors and walls) which I assume is from not enough air flow (we have those brush door seal things on the bottom of the door). Also, our dryer has a vent at the front as well as the back, so we use the vent coming out the front so the condensation doesn't build up on the wall behind the dryer. Incidentally, our dryer is wall-mounted as far from the external wall (glass sliding doors) as possible because a) We already had overhead cupboards above the sink which is next to the doors; b) There was no studs/nogins where we wanted it to go - right next to the overheads and above the washing machine, and; c) We don't have a duct in place in the walls to take the air outside anyway so position in the room was not that much of an issue as the fan would work no matter where the dryer was. Second Time 'Round Re: A question re dryers..... 7Aug 04, 2013 9:19 pm just a note, we just bought a condensor dryer (contains all the moisture) was the best thing we have ever purchased! You cant mount these to a wall though - they weigh a fair bit. You can call me Chris! I am trying really hard to figure out a way to fit my dryer next to washing machine (on the ground, obviously) - but it means cutting into my linen cupboard space. Hence, am trying to find a really narrow (but deep) laundry tub to save some space with the tub/cupboard. Hence the new post I am about to make. Thanks for that though casabonka.
