Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Dec 08, 2013 10:58 am I will have a 3 metre long kitchen island, with a kitchen bulkhead at 28 courses above it. I want two of these pendants for over the island: http://www.dunlinhome.com/products/tita ... ight-black (sorry, couldn't insert image) I have a choice of two diameters: 45 cm, or 36cm. Is 45 cm going to look too large or is it just right? While I have your attention.... If I have a dining room pendant with an 18 watt bulb, I'm going to need supplementary lighting, right? Thank you! http://www.housebythewater.wordpress.com From blank block to new home in Mandurah, Western Australia. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65564 Re: Pendant light diameter? Getting the scale right. 2Dec 30, 2013 10:08 am I'm thinking that the 45cm times 2 is going to be a bit too big, even though you have a 3m long island bench. It does look really nice though. The dining room pendant, that's 18w cfl/led or incandescent ? if cfl/led it might be enough. What you really need to know is the amount of lumens you want for that area, and I personally don't know your build or for that matter what YOU really want. Getting the scale right. 3Dec 30, 2013 10:43 am I think bpratt is correct that it may be a little too big. I am sure the interior designed inclided can opine but there must be some golden ratio that is used for visual impact. I had thought that pendants are used in odd numbers. 3 of the large would cover almost half of the bench. I would probably go for the smaller ones myself and maybe use two larger ones over the dining table. I would not pay too much thought to my design suggestions either as I am struggling massively in that space..... I think it would be good to see the planned area and the other design choices selected thus far so others can chime in. Remember that ultimately you have to live with it. Getting the scale right. 5Dec 30, 2013 12:54 pm Our island is 2.7m long, and we have got junction boxes in the ceiling, and plan to get 3 pendants installed after handover. We are currently looking at 3 x 40cm diameter pendants. In particular, these ones: http://micalighting.com.au/ceiling-lights/pendants-chandeliers/lea40-pendant-light.html We don't have a kitchen bulkhead though, the ceiling is 2590mm. I think with your slightly lower bulkhead, the bigger diameter might look too large, but then as you only have 2, not 3, it's hard to be sure. I understand your worry about getting it right, we've thought long and hard about ours and still aren't 100% sure. Re: Pendant light diameter? Getting the scale right. 6Feb 11, 2014 10:49 am Thanks for your help everyone. I forgot to subscribe to my own topic, so didn't notice the answers until now. I will stick with the 36 cm. As for the question about LED or incandescent, I'm not sure, I'm guessing incandescent - data sheet for product says: "Philips Ambiance, Energy Saver Globe" It's this one: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Lighting is so confusing, it's a shame I'm such a sucker for beautiful lights. http://www.housebythewater.wordpress.com From blank block to new home in Mandurah, Western Australia. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65564 Re: Pendant light diameter? Getting the scale right. 7Feb 11, 2014 4:23 pm I absolutely LOVE those lights just above. If your dining table and kitchen are near each other, I probably wouldn't have 2 completely different styles. I would just choose either dining or kitchen bench for the feature lighting. Going back to look at your plan so I can see where your rooms are! Did I mention that I LOVE those lights! Re: Pendant light diameter? Getting the scale right. 8Feb 11, 2014 9:34 pm Good point Kristen. I was actually thinking of different lights in dining room, living room and kitchen which are all in the same space... Hmm. I actually reckon I can get away with it, but that has decided me that I'm keeping the kitchen bench pendants to just two, so they are not positioned too close to the dining room. I think I'll have to do some a mood board soon for these three rooms together, to make sure I'm not creating clashes. http://www.housebythewater.wordpress.com From blank block to new home in Mandurah, Western Australia. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65564 Re: Pendant light diameter? Getting the scale right. 9Feb 18, 2014 3:33 am Remember also that the pendants will cast light in a cone. That means the size of the circle of light that cone casts on your bench top will be a function of the size of the fixture and how high above the bench top it hangs. You want those circles to intersect pretty substantially, or you'll have odd dark spots in your work area... Gets more complicated by the minute! So any clues for this scenario: 3 metre bench, choice of 36 cm diameter or 45 cm diameter pendant (same pendant), bench height standard 940mm, ceiling height 28 course bulkhead (2.4 m), probably needs minimum 50 cm length for hanging. (Couldn't post pic, so here's the link: http://www.dunlinhome.com/products/tita ... ight-black) My husband and I had the pendant up on the telly screen yesterday, enlarged to real size and our measuring tapes out to show bench length. We thought 2 pendants were enough, but we didn't think about light output/shadows. Back to the drawing board.... ( Might have to go for a more delicate pendant and move to 3.) http://www.housebythewater.wordpress.com From blank block to new home in Mandurah, Western Australia. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65564 Re: Pendant light diameter? Getting the scale right. 11Feb 20, 2014 5:01 pm Good info there guys. I would use 3x pendants. 1x would be directly in the centre of the bench, and the other 2x about 900mm in from the edge, maybe less depending on how it looks. Its hard to gauge if you can't see it. But I would definitely go for 3x if you are using this as your main light over the bench. If you have other lights that will switched on while cooking/preparing, then you can get away with 2x pendants (any size) because the other lights will provide ample lighting. What size did you end up using? I too only want to use 2 larger size pendants over our island which is only small at 2.4m but we have high ceilings at 3.1m. Fell in love with the coco too but can't afford it so just going the replica polk. It comes in 30cm and 46cm diameter and I'm totally stuck on what will look "right"!! Re: Pendant light diameter? Our island is much smaller at 2.4m x 1100m so I don't think the 46cm will work but our ceilings are 3.1m so the next size down 30cm might be too small ( i really want just two not the common look of three pendants) I really need a size in between I think!! Arrr so frustrating! Re: Pendant light diameter? Getting the scale right. 19Jun 30, 2016 9:53 pm Ooh. That ceiling height is a bit tricky. If you are feeling brave, I think two pendants hung at different heights would look great, especially if they were hung off centre, as a "group". http://www.housebythewater.wordpress.com From blank block to new home in Mandurah, Western Australia. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65564 I'm putting a new floor in my kitchen, slate flagging on a standard concrete slab.
