Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Apr 20, 2015 10:04 am As the title suggests, I need some opinions / ideas on the best approach to lighting my garage. The usual single fluro light just doesn't do it for me as I like to "tinker" on my cars or motorcycle and there is nothing worse than having to get a work lamp out because you can't bloody see. Do I use 4 fluros? Except 2 would be hidden if the garage. Door was up? Also want to be able to see with ease when 2 cars are parked in garage. Open to suggestions. Re: Light Up My Garage! 4Apr 20, 2015 1:54 pm Definitely use an LED Batten Light. I would suggest at least 2x batten with 2x tubes in each. I can PM you some links if you like? That may help you understand further. Re: Light Up My Garage! 6Apr 20, 2015 2:39 pm We used LED strips. Cheap, easy to install and very effective. About half way down this page there is a pic. http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=70956&start=140 Re: Light Up My Garage! 7Apr 20, 2015 9:24 pm I get RuffTuffs example as being pretty cool. I don't understand the advice to just use led battens. Light output compared to 28w t5 tubes is not close enough especially when considering their cost. I may end up with 22 ea 28w dual battens in my garage;) Sent from an elegant mobile device using Tapatalk. No point going LED just for the sake of it if you can get equal or better efficiency from fluorescent. I especially would not bother with LED tubes as they have about the same efficacy as T5 or T8 fluorescent tubes. Below are power usage and lumen output figures for typical 1200mm tubes: 18w LED tube 1850 lumens 36w T8 fluoro tube 3350 lumens 28w T5 fluoro tube 2650 lumens Although the LED tube uses half as much power as the T8 fluorescent, it also only produces just over half the amount of light, but the LED tubes cost several times more than a fluoro - so there is really no point. Probably just the cheap diffuser style that spreads light everywhere lol but... That's exactly what I want haha Cheers, Paul (& Lisa) Parkhill 36 by ClarendonHomes in Coomera Retreat H1 Build Thread And Blog Building Blogs List - Go Ahead And Add Yours!! Re: Light Up My Garage! 10May 06, 2015 3:23 pm That would work, but you'd need about 3 or 4 domestic LED downlights to equal one T5 fluorescent tube. Most double garages would have two 2X28W T5 fluorescent battens, so to equal that you'd need 12-14 domestic LED downlights. You could probably squeeze it down to 9 at the least. One thing I would strongly suggest for garage lighting is to also put in a motion sensor so when you drive or walk in to the garage the lights come on. You can still connect it to a regular switch if you want the lights off or on. The lights in the garage door motors are pathetic. The problem with comparing the downlights with the standard T5 is that the T5 is only in 2 locations. I can probably use 9 downlights (yes that probably sounds excessive lol) in a 3 x 3 grid. This will put light right around the room as well as down the middle. Doing this I would expect to have sufficient light at any point around a car, even if both cars were in the garage. I like the idea of the motion sensor Cheers, Paul (& Lisa) Parkhill 36 by ClarendonHomes in Coomera Retreat H1 Build Thread And Blog Building Blogs List - Go Ahead And Add Yours!! Re: Light Up My Garage! 14Jun 03, 2015 10:35 pm I had a sensor light in our old garage. It was great, every time you went in the light would, come on, either in foot by the back door or by car via the roller. Only problem was that the sensor was an older one that didn't have an always on override. Many times I found myself working in the garage late at night and the lights went out. had to move around, often in a precarious position due to all the 'work' around me. I ended up installing another flouro over the workbench with a separate switch, but kept leaving it on because I was so used to the sensor working. New house has three flouros in the main section and an additional led down light over the bench. Should cover most aspects, and next Tuesday the sparky is installing a sensor for the bench light so we can enter safely from the roller without having to find a way through to the switch. Also the flouro lights putting out more lumens than the equivalent LEDs is because the floruo lights emit the light in every direction while the LEDs are directional and won't point light back at the roof. I like the idea of the LED strips on the ceiling too, they put out heaps of light for the power they use and you can put them just about anywhere. Re: Light Up My Garage! 15Jun 03, 2015 10:37 pm What's the difference between the T8 and T5 tubes for use in a garage ? Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Blog : http://bandlnewhomebuild.blogspot.com H1 thread : viewtopic.php?f=38&t=68283 . Re: Light Up My Garage! 16Jun 04, 2015 6:59 pm Nothing really. They are just different sizes. T8 is older style and T5 is newer and thinner. A 1200mm T5 28W tube puts out around 2600lumens of light. A 1200mm 36W T8 tube puts out around 3300 lumens. Both are fine. T5 is just ever so slightly more efficient Building Services Engineer Renovating our 1960's modernist home in Brisbane https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=82091 Re: Light Up My Garage! 17Jun 04, 2015 9:58 pm Iafter reading this thread last night I remembered I had an LED tube that was the wrong size for our old house. New garage had one flouro the right size in it so I switched it out. Took out an 18w flouro and put in a 10w led tube. Don't think the light output is quite the same, but it is still pretty good and doesn't waste as much light shining it back at the roof. Good point is that it turns on instantly instead of flickering like the other flouros that I haven't changed over. Hi - thanks for your reply. Yes I think 'Ill go for whitish with very speckly bits rather than pure white something like this.
