Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Mar 09, 2015 9:00 am Can anyone "design" a lighting layout from plans? And if so.. any recommendations and rough costs? I was initially planning on using LED downlights everywhere but the more I read, the more confused I get. Beam angles, wall washers, dark dingy rooms verse bright crisp rooms.... Think I might need some help lol. Cheers, Paul (& Lisa) Parkhill 36 by ClarendonHomes in Coomera Retreat H1 Build Thread And Blog Building Blogs List - Go Ahead And Add Yours!! Re: Lighting Designer? 3Mar 11, 2015 6:15 am I know they (lighting designers) exist. And on this forum I've heard of people going to Beacon and getting help there with plans. Using a phone. Please excuse typos and autocorrect issues. And brevity. Re: Lighting Designer? 4Mar 11, 2015 6:29 am I'm an electrical engineer (built environment) and lighting design makes up probably 25-30% of my job, so you could say I'm a lighting designer. Most of what I do is in buildings like hospitals, office buildings, museums, hotels, universities, parks etc. I would be happy to help you with a design but due to professional indemnity I have to do it through work and charge $220/hr, which I am sure you probably don't want. I'm sure there are small lighting designers out there who would be much cheaper. I'm sure places like Beacon have lighting design consultants in house, but obviously they will be pushing their products that have the best profit margin, not necessarily the best design for your money. It's likely that these people aren't really qualified lighting designers either, so yes it might be a free consultation, but will you get what you want out of it? Proper lighting design is an engineering approach involving various calculations including 2D and 3D lighting design calculation and visualization software, but all of this is a little unnecessary for a house unless you're building a multi million dollar extravaganza of a building... Re: Lighting Designer? 5Mar 11, 2015 7:15 am Have you had a look at this thread viewtopic.php?f=8&t=71962&p=1316358#p1316358 ? You need to visit a showroom to see the different kinds of lights and not just in a box but actually hooked up to electricity to see the kind of light they throw - up, down, wall washing, angle etc. Not many people I know who have done a major reno or built a new house have only one sort of light. Usually they have a combination to suit each individual room depending on what purpose that room serves. Here's my comment from the above thread... Quote: As per AKB. Different lights for different purposes. Long hallway - downlights, longish laundry and garage - two fluoros, kitchen - pendants over the island bench, ceiling downlights for the rest, lounge - downlights, wall lights and table lamps, bathrooms - downlights and spots over the vanities. Do as much homework and research as you can so you have that info at your fingertips so if you do employ a lighting designer or even someone off the lighting company showroom floor you know what they are talking about and don't get talked into anything you may later regret. Re: Lighting Designer? 8Mar 11, 2015 2:07 pm Just out of curiosity, what sort of budget have you in mind for light fittings? I see that you're in Qld, I could certainly put you in touch with very good, ethical lighting suppliers who are also good at design who could put together a package for you, but of course this will depend on your budget. for instance if it's $1,000 then to be honest it would probably be a bit of a waste of time. If it's $5,000-10,000 then it would be worthwhile. It's good to have an idea what kind of lightings you have in mind already (pendant/ down lights/chandelier etc) so as to cater for the light points, switches(one or 2ways) and dimmers. It's always better to cater more light points than less....my 2 cents Your build is relatively simple, I believe your job can be easily done by a good building designer, you really do not need to pay for the architect.
