Hello folks,
I am renovating a split level home which has a vaulted entryway, this entryway ends leads to a double story single-leaf brick wall that is taking the load of the vaulted ceiling.
Our plan was to remove 2x 900mm wide archway (dooryways), and lift the height of the dooryways so they are inline with the single story roof behind them.. I removed archway one today (see photo), and the results are very impressive - so much so that my partner in crime has suggested we look into widening the opening. If we go "all the way" the "ideal" width is just under 3.2m ( @3170mm).
I happen to have a 150mm lintel handy that is 3.7m long (150mm x 80 mm x 10mm) - and I'm wondering if by some chance this lintel might just be ok for this job?
One end of the lintel would be supported by the perpendicular wall, the bricks are 110mm wide, so that's not the 150mm standard for load/edge bearing the lintel - so I'm thinking I would spread the load by resting this new lintel on a piece of the offcut.
And if this isn't viable, then I'm wondering what width opening I could make using this lintel?
I'd be happy to engage an engineer, but its xmas and few are taking calls..
