Bona Mega floor finish

Hello!

Can people provide comment as to how durable the Bona Mega floor finish should be?

I recently had sanded off 15 year-old 2-pack (polyurethane) finish and re-done with the Bona product.

We are finding, even after just a few weeks, that is marks very easily: Scratches to the coating and indentations into the timber from the usual activity one would expect in a home. This never happened before. (Mostly from furniture, not foot traffic. Have sliders and felts on all chairs and stools, even.)

Reading material from Bona suggest that the product should be more hard wearing than 'old school' epoxy product, but this does not seem to be the case.

Have had a rep from Bona and the floor contractor look at it – and they reckon it's is as should be. (They discount the difference between products by not having seen previous.)

We had the Bona finish done at our last house. We loved it. We didn't do it in our previous house and when we moved out after just 18months we had very very very distinct fading where our couches and rug had been (in fact it looked like we had used completely different timber under the furniture). So in our last home we decided to do the Bona finish (I haven't heard it called Bona Mega before so maybe there are different types - I'm sorry if that's the case) and after having it down in the kitchen, dining, main living and 2 long hallways I have to say I was very impressed. There was no fading and the floor looked very good for a nearly 3 year old floor (and I wasn't embarrassed about the new owners of the home seeing the floors like I was in the previous house). We will definately be doing it again in the current build.
Wear wise I would say that it was fairly similar to our previous timber floors but certainly not better, if that's what they claim. Perhaps if I really think about it, it didn't wear quite as well but it is a little harder for me to judge because we only had a baby in the first place but we had 2 kids running around in the 2nd house so it had to cope with alot more!!!
I'm sorry to hear you aren't happy. Maybe if you start to move furniture around in 12months time and notice that it hasn't faded you will be a little happier with it. Sorry.

What was the previous finish you had?

And what type of timber is it applied to? (Ours is Tasmanian Oak.)

Bona Mega is their standard heavy duty finish – Traffic is the same but more elastic.

Sorry for late reply.

I actually don't know what type of finish I had on the previous house. I trusted the guy who did the sand and polish to do whatever he thought was best (he was an old school friend that I hadn't seen for years). Even though the floor looked great, it was a bad idea to trust him because he actually did heaps of damage to our skirting and alot of our joinery (custom made built in study, bar, built in cabinet for tv and fire and all the kitchen). Unfortunately I had paid him as soon as he finished the floors but it wasn't until I got into the house a week later that I found all the damage. I had paid him cash and I couldn't get in contact with him. I later found out that he had left town not long after our job.
Sorry back to the point - That flooring was Blackbutt.
The Bona finish was applied to Firestreak. We opted for the lowest grade timber both times as we really like all the feature in the timber.
