Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jun 22, 2010 4:20 pm Hi, this is our bedroom window (beach/holiday home) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I, was thinking of putting white timberlook venetians here, but a bit concerned that they are not thermally very good, and perhaps let too much light in (although we face west, so no morning sun). Any ideas? 4walls/Michelle, do you think it would be better having a double track (mitred at corner) and put blockout and sheers here instead? It is facing neighbours and driveway goes down side, so need some privacy. Looking forward to some suggestions! Are you a person who wants a totally dark room for when the sun gets up earlier than you do, or want most light blocked out? I suppose the other consideration is if headlights from the neighbours cars disturb your sleep? Putting up curtains, you have the issue of balance with one window looking to be 4 times the width of the smaller one - eg if you have 2 panels closing into the corner, when the curtains are open you are going to have much more fabric to one side than the other. You could have 1 panel for the smaller window and 2 on the larger window, however the left panel will cover the window which will block some light out. It would also obscure part of next doors drive, given the angle of the photo, and give better balance. Curtains are possible - blinds maybe a better option given the shape and depending what space there is either side of the window (I notice there is a power point on the wall which curtains may get in the way of what is placed there) Re: Bedroom Window - ideas needed please 6Jun 24, 2010 12:25 am Thanks for your replies Ring09, now I understand what you mean. I've seen the double roller blinds - I'm not sure that its the look I want - rather plain (only in my personal opinion). Thanks anyway. 4walls, thanks for your helpful comments. I think just having most light blocked out would be fine - doesn't have to be fully blockout. We shouldn't get any direct light in our room from neighbours vehicles next door. I see what you mean about curtains being out of balance if only having 2 panels, hadn't thought about that! Maybe it would be better to have 2 panels on the bigger window and loose some light. Have you seen or done this on similar windows before? Otherwise I guess I could go back to timberlook verticals, but back to problem of insulating properties! Re: Bedroom Window - ideas needed please 7Jun 24, 2010 4:24 pm Hello, I have simular windows in my main bedroom. What I have opted for is taupe linen like roller blinds, with a coloured blockout drape. for night time. The roller blinds are ok to see thru to outside , but give enough privacy for a quick change of clothes during the day Re: Bedroom Window - ideas needed please 8Jun 24, 2010 4:36 pm Here is what we have in our front bedroom & living room, they also face west so get a lot of afternoon sun. Blockout roller blinds placed inside the window cavity plus sheers. you may get more light filtered out if you place the blockouts over the window cavity, but then the sheers wouldn't look as nice IMO. it still gets quite hot in these rooms of a summer afternoon, so not great insulating qualities, but that doesn't bother us too much. Re: Bedroom Window - ideas needed please 11Jun 25, 2010 8:57 am We have timber venetians on quite few windows including a north west window. It has reasonable thermal qualities, although being a west window, in summer it would be worth getting an external blind as well, as this stops the sun even hitting the window. There is one downside. I am not sure what the timber look venetians are made of, but our timber blind on the NW window has suffered a lot of sun damage. Ours was oiled (as it's above a kitchen sink). All the rest of our blinds still look good (would have been up over 12 years) but that particular looks pretty average due to sun damage. Another reason we would like an external blind Re: Bedroom Window - ideas needed please 12Jun 25, 2010 11:39 pm Tjilpi, the venetians we are looking at are actually a pvc (with polystyrene inside). They are said to be fade proof, fire retardent and have a 10 year warranty. We are looking at white ones and were told they are guaranteed not to go yellow. Thanks for your comments. Re: Bedroom Window - ideas needed please 13Jun 25, 2010 11:59 pm why dont you get full timber venetians. i have used set sized ones and cut them to size before, relatively easy and i am not a handyman. the reason i mentioned this is cause i got mine from spotlight and they are having there 50% off sale now. Only goes for a few days though. they have heaps of sizes to choose from. Pick the closest size and trimm it. i did this for whole house before and they were gr8 for keeping most of the light and nearly all of the heat out. and my house also faced west. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=37134 THE THREAD https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=35962 THE BLOG! http://pedrosinspiredbeauty.blogspot.com/ BRICKS BRICKS ARE FINISHED... I don't have any photos I can show you, although I have seen this type of solution to similar windows. Roman blinds that are interlined will give you insulating properties - you would have to get this custom made as measurement will be key to avoid the two blinds hindering each other when being open and closed.
