Deemaree Kyndylan Capers: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=46852 My blog: http://www.sufficientlysufficient.blogspot.com/ Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 42May 15, 2010 6:42 pm Rowena I have been living with vertical venetian blinds for the past nine years * I feel like I'm experiencing some sort of torture test every time I have to correct/untangle the bottom beady chain thing that keep them straight * They get dirty and it's difficult to clean them * They wrinkle over time when there is a strong wind (and you haven't pulled them back further to avoid the wind) * I am being tortured every morning with sun in my eyes because of the 1cm gap between the blinds and the window frame * There was one major condition with agreeing to build this house with DP, that we never ever have venetian blinds in the house! We are going for curtains throughout, except for the kitchen window. (toilets and bathrooms are frosted high windows so don't need any coverings) Best wishes from a crazy woman with a vendetta against venetian blinds Oh too funny, this is so what I deal with everyday in this rental. We have the ones that don't have chains on the bottom, so they are "safer" for children, but they get caught on the carpet when I close them, and I have to make sure that everyone is in the right position before I can sit down and relax. On the slider, which has two panels of glass on either side of the door, they open out to either edge, and if a big gust of wind comes through, somehow it manages to suck the blinds to the flyscreen and they are all wrinkled and ******* looking. Also agree with the blinding light coming through the gap! In our last house we had slimline venetians (which I won't be getting again either as they get so dusty and are hard to clean), we had them on our sliding doors and they were fine. We just had one big one, not two separate ones and it was easy enough raising the whole blind so it was out of the way. This time round, I'm going sheer curtains on our living room (all sliding doors) as we don't need the privacy, but just to give it a finished look. Our bedroom which looks onto the street we will get a sunshade with a blockout over the top and the other rooms, just the blockouts. I would rather live with the tempory blinds for $5 from bunnings (which I could well be doing with our budget blowout lol), than live with verticals again ETA: didn't realise d.o.d.g.y was a word that gets sensored! Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 43May 15, 2010 7:07 pm Hmmmm ... and I thought that this would be a no brainer I do like the Vs for practicality - just turn them to side for privacy, or sunshine, or shade ... The only downside for me is the bottom cords IF you leave them exposed to the draft. Otherwise, they are fine (ie. bearable). In regards to insulation ... agree, not good, but I hate having to have thick, long, wide AND drawn (on a cold day) fabric curtains which virtually seal the window just to try to compensate for the core issue - it's the damn single glazing that should simply be outlawed. It's not just the temperature, the noise is most often the same as if the windows are opened. BTW, does anyone know if anyone makes Panel Glides with glass panels (small) ? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 44May 15, 2010 7:08 pm Michelle The Little Misses….bet your glad you posted this up? Sure are It's always good to seek others opinions though. I've haven't had the displeasure of verticals before, i never thought about the swishing. We visited our block today to see what progress they've made this week, and we drove around our estate, and i noticed most of the homes had either timber or timber look Venetians, the pull down blinds or verticals. I really love the timbers, they just look so warm and inviting, so much so that i was tempted to door knock and ask if i could sit in their living room and just admire them Dear J.K. Sincerely, Anonymous Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 46May 18, 2010 4:13 pm the window coverings are a concern for me as well - I have a wide front elevation with a "few" windows I was considering the Luxaflex Luminette - does anybody have any idea of their cost? If anyone has any other recommendations of reasonably priced curtain and blinds, either bricks and mortar, or online, would love to check them out (prefer in Melbourne) I've been Googling non stop, trying to find solutions, but can't find anything that really takes my fancy. I've basically decided to go for timber blinds on the windows, and only need a solution for the sliding doors now. If worse comes to worse, i'll pop curtains up if i still haven't found anything, and will replace them when i find something i really like Dear J.K. Rowling, Your books are entirely unrealistic. The whole lot was $5k from Home Outlet (some pics are on my blog in my siggie but you will need to scroll through the pics). They are a bricks and Mortar store and definitely worth checking out. We put cement sheeting behind the planter to protect the fence. Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 52May 19, 2010 11:38 am Lex - plantations can't be fully opened - but some of them allow you to open them up like casement windows and fold back against the wall After 4 years - we're in! Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 53May 19, 2010 11:46 am Thanks Hels ... I was so mesmerized by your house that I actually went on and paddled back up to midway of bricking !!! Your house is very livable with those amazing soft colours ... just so dreamy ... and I took notice of the Beige Chalk (I saw this colour before, it's one of the very best white coffee colours to me)... I noticed your porc floor tiles did not need any screed, just glue did it? What an amazing tiler !! Your shower floors are well above any display home! Pitty he's not in Sydney! Thanks, scr .... well, that puts the p/shtrs somewhat back into the plans ! ... now I need to re-investigate them !! Oh, the only thing is, one of the "main" windows which would have the shutters is too close to the corner, so dunno how would that work ... I actually realised just yesterday that we should have moved that window away from the corner and more into the room !! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ...
