Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Apr 18, 2022 8:26 pm I am a total noob which probably explains why I bought 50 metres of "cat6" cable from eBay assuming there would be a standard construction,. I ran the cable across to our granny flat to create a wifi access point from my modem router using a tp-link c20 router in the flat ($60 at Officeworks). However, when I came to wire the wall sockets on both ends I noticed that, not only are the wires not twisted in pairs, the colours are a little different to what I expected. The pairs appear to be blue & light blue, brown & light brown, green & light green, orange & white. I expected one of each pair to be striped but assume the solid lighter colours (including white) are in place of the stripes. I believe I used the 568A standard to wire the sockets so hoped it would work using my assumptions on colours. However, unfortunately I have no internet signal in the flat and would humbly request some help in troubleshooting the problem. Does it matter that the pairs are not twisted? Do I really have to get different cable and rerun it, or should the cable suffice for basic internet speeds? Re: Non-standard Cat6 cable 2Apr 18, 2022 9:21 pm Don't know what you bought but it doesn't sound like cat6 cable. While there's a difference between cat 3, cat 5, cat 5e and cat6 one of the main differences is how tightly twisted the pairs are. Without any twisted pairs i have no idea how well it would work, but my guess is it would run like cat 3 at best, which is 10mbps, pretty useless in today's world or not work at all. https://cdn.chipkin.com/assets/uploads/ ... -03-33.png Without being an expert I think you're stuck buying fresh cable and re running it. Another option would be to pick up a tester and check the terminations. https://www.pccasegear.com/products/485 ... ble-tester I am looking at replacing some overhead power cable and I am trying to work out what gauge of cable this is so I can price it.
