Hub: Samsung Smartthings using z-wave is illegal in Australia for those posting earlier. You can use it and switch off z-wave just to use zigbee but that limits your choices of hardware to buy. I'm tossing up between Vera or going full DIY with a rasberry-Pi and homeassistant with a z-wave stick. Voice: Enjoying me Amazon echo at the moment but think I will switch to Google Home in the new build. Found this today which blew me away (https://www.xda-developers.com/unlockin ... autovoice/) and the future looks bright for GH. Thinking of getting a few (master, main lounge, study/library) and getting some chromecasts for TV's/speakers for easy integration into current products I have. Video/Audio: This is where I don't fully know yet but would love some advice. I am going to get the Harmony Hub to link up all my tv's, recievers, media players controls as that has integration with IFTTT or GH/Amazon natively. This will give me simple voice control of most setups. Usually just off and on though and maybe some volume control or next control. Currently have 2 main TV's with one hooked up to nVidia Shield and the other to the xbox so media centre's covered for both there. Master will probably just get a roku stick or similar. Got my QNap NAS which i'll have to integrate as well. Pre-Wiring: I'm going through the pre-wiring plan at the moment with the builder. Putting in Clipsall switches in the areas i know i want to automate (entry, walkway, library/study, master, lounge, kitchen, dining, theatre) and the rest leave normal. Trying to put data points in most of those rooms as well with CAT6 going into front lounge x 1, master x 2, lounge x 2, theatre x 2 and then hub area point will have 2 as well. I'm getting some advice on this as still a little uncertain of requirements for the setup i want. Trying to think of the power needed for thinks like august door cam, netgear arlo security cameras, blinds etc although I recently found Movez (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/move ... #/comments) which doesn't need power which could save some money. Front door/Entry: Going with August doorbell cam and lock combination over the ring and kwikset. More seamlessly integrated and works with existing deadbolts rather than relying on kwikset's own. Getting a couple of hue bulbs for outside entry and inside entry. Heating/Cooling: Wanting to get ecobee 3 but still needing to work through the components needed to integrate into Australian heating and cooling units. I read on whirlpool you can buy a specific curcuit board for the Brivis so i'll need to research that a bit more to try to integrate. Security: Currently have netgear arlo which I think is really good and which the release of the new series it's looking better and better so i'll just add to the current system I think. Blinds: As i mentioned earlier i'm going to get a few Movez units as they make it for AU frequency.. thinking front study/library, master, lounge, kitchen/dining and theatre. Other: Looking at the garagio unit to allow automation for the garage, Rachio for water irregation system, some wemo plugs for other things like coffee machine etc and i'm also looking for something to allow integration for the pool too but still researching those. Anyway any thoughts, questions, ideas would be fantastic. Thanks Jacky Re: Home Technology Hub 288Dec 22, 2016 11:05 am Hi Jackyboy, Nice to see someone having a clear idea on what they would like to achieve with HA... "Samsung Smartthings using z-wave is illegal in Australia for those posting earlier"... other people would appreciate if you could explain why.... I am not buying Amazon Echo or GH but using Voxcommando & Eventghost.... Eventghost has plugins for Samsung TV and Denon (stuff I own) so AV automation is easy there... I pre-wired every room in the house with Cat6 and prewired windows for motorised blinds/curtains If you have few gadgets that works on RF/IR consider buying a Broadlink RF mini 3 to integrate this gadgets into HA Garage unit: Again Broadlink might come handy or Wemo Maker ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXYSaEAfxaU ) What stage are you in with your build? Looking forward to share ideas/experience Re: Home Technology Hub 289Dec 22, 2016 11:54 am Thanks RegVic. I should note the device itself is not illegal in Australia but the ability to use it's z-wave frequency (which is the US frequency for z-wave) is. They use a different frequency to Australia and the frequency they use is actually reserved for telecom and emergency services and thus illegal for use outside of that. There have been a few still buy and just use zigbee and wifi and just switch the z-wave frequency off but to me that defeats the purpose of buying it. I've tried to lobby them to release an AU freq version but to no avail yet. Can you talk me through your prewired setup if you don't mind..? where you said "i run Cat6 to every room and windows". What are they for? how many runs? did you put a conduit for later wiring? The RF/IR is interesting and as noted i'm building in a opticomm area so the builder actually has an option for a 4 switch for the TV points we want which come with point 1 = tv aerial, point 2 = foxtel, point 3 = phone or data and point 4 = phone or data. So i'm choosing the 2 data option for the master, main lounge, theatre and the exit point (cupboard in second bed). I have also run a seperate cat6 cable to the library/study for computer etc. I have heard people running many cables per room but i think costs came into my decision and also i don't think i fully understood why. My foxtel/server/plex setup is what worries me a little. Not sure if i just have points in rooms or if i go along the lines of a matrix. Thanks for the garage unit links. That might save some $$ and looks pretty good. We just did selections so hence all the research and questions. I can still make changes at tender so i'm asking everyone and question i can before that. I also have a friend who is a sparky which helps with this sort of stuff. Yeah i hope to share what i can with people here and to also hear stories and experiences from others. We were already in build stage before we thought about HA so it's too late for us. Having said that, a full blown c-bus HA is around $50k which turned us off! Alas, we have some motorised blinds and motorised power sockets to island bench. We are getting timer units for indoor and outdoor lighting to program them. I'm planning to get the Amazon echo as the price is much cheaper than the Google version. RegVic Hi Jackyboy, Nice to see someone having a clear idea on what they would like to achieve with HA... The windows got just the standard electrical cable for motorised blinds Don't forget to put few power points above the ceiling (I got one above the theatre room for projector, one above alfresco and one right in the middle of the house just in case I need it) Nowadays this is standard but just check with the electrician they are running electrical cables with neutral (3 wires instead of 2) because most of the HA stuff like Z-wave need neutral... Re: Home Technology Hub 293Dec 22, 2016 2:07 pm I'm thinking of upgrading to an iZone 310 controller at our pre-start meeting next month. I know it's a bit of a luxury to be able to control your aircon system from your phone but we have a pre-start allowance to use and it's more appealing spending it on this than something like an upgraded garage door colour Our build thread with Smart Homes for Living in Wellard https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=86092 Re: Home Technology Hub 294Dec 29, 2016 12:46 pm Orpheus For those worried about wifi coverage in yr massive homes (you know the big mansions above 42sq), here are some wifi mesh solutions. Door Lock: if you're going down the z-wave route, I'd suggest the Lockwood z-wave deadbolt. I totally love it. On related topic, I got a proper S/IP enabled door bell rather than one that uses proprietary protocol. Cons: expensive, and you need to run your own SIP exchange (eg Asterisk), but gives me more flexibility Vera z-wave controller: It's clunky but does the job. If so, do you mind sharing what I should budget in terms of $$$ and hours? Saturn switches are nice, but I actually didn't get them. I've got the standard range with Impress switches. I wanted to keep all the faceplates consistent, including the ethernet, but the Saturn range is a bit limited. Oh, and not to mention, cost. I just didn't see it as good bang for buck. It was also my first foray into z-wave, so didn't know how full on I wanted to go. I use the Aeon Labs in-wall switches (I can recommend Capital Smarthomes- very good customer service), though I'm thinking of giving the Fibaro units a try. Easy to install, especially if you know an electrician who accepts payment in beer vouchers. The Aeon units, and I believe Fibaro, accept either a momentary or toggle switch, and yeah, one unit can do a two/three way switch. Basically, you need one controller per thing you want to turn on/off, regardless of the number of switches. Though, note, you can get double units, which control two devices in one z-wave unit. I don't control fans with z-wave, so can't comment on that Doorbell, I got the Amroad DP3210 http://www.amroad.com.tw/amroad-products/amroad-dp3210/ The technology has gotten cheaper with more entrants to the market since I bought mine, so best to do your own research.
