Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 26, 2015 12:01 pm We are having a 1250mm front door with glass panels, with 2x 40cm glass panels at either side of the door. Aesthetically, I am leaning towards normal transparent glass, however thinking from a practical perspective, I am worried this is a decision I will regret, and that I will never have any privacy. Day shouldn't be too bad but at night if any lights are on, this is where there could be a problem. What did you do? Particularly keen to hear from anyone who went for regular glass, and whether you regret it! The amount of glazing in the door and sidelight is fairly minimal though, and we're high up off the street. You can just get the film from Bunnings and it's really easy to use, from what I can tell. Otherwise, just reglaze it yourself with a glazier later if you really want the proper glass. It's easier to pretend you're not home at times, particularly if your entry way is a thoroughfare to other rooms. In my first build the stairs were visible from it! Re: Front door: opaque or transparent? 8Apr 26, 2015 4:19 pm We are still in the process of building but have gone with translucent glass in our front door. It will still allow light through whilst maintaining privacy and security. It was an easy decision for us as we have other windows in the same glass. On the plus side we get privacy, security, and a soft filtered light rather than a bright light and we wont feel like we're living in a fish bowl! Personal opinion and taste though. Re: Front door: opaque or transparent? 9Apr 26, 2015 4:36 pm I prefer transparent too, aesthetically, but went translucent because the line of sight through the door and down the hallway through to the main living area would have allowed no privacy. If our hallway had been offset and there had been a wall facing the entryway, we definitely would have gone transparent. I think it depends on your plan. I'd generally go for translucent, but prefer a slumped glass rather than a flat film, as somehow that seems more open and like a window. Re: Front door: opaque or transparent? 11Apr 26, 2015 10:40 pm Not a fan of transparent at all! That's the only option we have with our build so we're planning on either frosting the glass (either using a sticker or getting it done properly) or tinting. Our master bedroom is right at the front of the house so you would always have to make sure you're decently dressed if you left the room! (not to mention people seeing right down the hall into the house at night). But we chose to keep the front door and sidelight transparent. However our home is 100m from the road and up the hill, so not real big privacy issues. If we were concerned, we'd put a curtain on the inside of the door.
