Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 21, 2015 1:06 am My front door is centered from the front of the house but not from the hallway looking out. It is 50mm on one side and 440mm to the other (the door is a 1200mm pivot). I could probably sneak a 100mm from the garage bringing the 50mm to 150mm but would this be enough? Or does anyone have any other suggestions? Also there are lots of threads about the danger of pivot doors have you thought about butt hinges instead? That's what we are doing with our 1210 wide door. Re: Front door not centered - advice needed please 3Jan 21, 2015 8:30 am The door would be offset like that for maneuverability clearance. If you can imagine for a sec how you stand when you open the front door of your current house, how many steps do you have to take (sideways and backward) in order to fully open the door? The greater the space on the latch side of a door the easier it is to open. With a decent amount of latch side offset most of us don't have to fully open a door to begin walking through the doorway - it makes a whole lot of sense to leave it as it is to me. If you have a look around the new build forum you'll find most of us have it. It may not be required in the BCA for Residential builds but it's certainly a component of mobility and access building guidelines everywhere as far as I know.
