Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 01, 2008 7:09 pm Hi all,
Further to my latest postings about my slab needing cut back. My builder has kindly had the areas addressed but unfortunately during the cut back there has been some metal reinforcement exposed. What needs to be done to repair this?, does it need repair? is it a big problem? Would really appreciate some advice on this.. I am waiting eagerly for to-dolist, you seem to be the man in the know. There are several qualified builders and domestic building designers on this site who are probably much better qualified than me...anyway here's what I would do if it occurred on one of my non-domestic jobs (a photo of the extent of damage would be useful but I'll assume it's relatively localised). Apply some rust treatment to the exposed steel, this will basically turn any surface rust back to black steel. Then repair the damaged concrete with a polymer modified cement render. The "polymer modified" bit ensures it is low shrink and therefore doesn't shrink away from the repaired area and let moisture in, between the repair and the existing concrete. These products also have the advantage of being able to be applied from about 2 mm to 15 mm and can be feathered (i.e. thin at the edges and still stick). They can also be applied horizontally, vertically, and therefore you can re-create an edge with them. This is a bit of a "rolls royce" solution and the builder will probably use a high strength mortar mix particularly if the repair ends up being reasonably well protected on completion of the house. On a domestic construction this is probably fine but I would hope that they would use something with a polymer component mainly because generally high strength mixes will shrink a bit more and because the polymer component makes repairing it easier. If there are those that disagree or think this is over the top....please comment.....as I approach this from a non-domestic construction background. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Building Standards; Getting It Right!
