Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 03, 2008 8:58 pm Hi All,
Sorry if this has already been discussed previously (I'm sure it has been), but I couldn't find what I was after. I'm building in Brisbane & approaching handover stage. The builders have done all the trench work to the house & installed the telephone wall points inside the house. I'm about to contact Telstra to ask them to "connect the telephone" at a cost of nearly $300. I don't have a problem with that (as I assume it's the standard fee). However, I'm getting confused by the wording used on the Telstra website. My understanding (based on the wording they use) is that they'll only connect the telephone line up if I agree to sign up to one of their phone plans. Ideally I only want Telstra to activate the phone lines, and sign up to another provider for my phone plan.... CAN I DO THIS??? HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD TELSTRA CONNECT THE LINE & SIGN UP TO ANOTHER COMPANY E.G. OPTUS???? Any advice is greatly appreciated as I'm looking at arranging for phoneline activation by the start of next week. Thanks. Re: Connecting the Phone - Do I need to sign up to Telstra? 2Apr 03, 2008 9:02 pm I'm prety certain that you can get the line connected then use whoever you want. The ACCC would have a problem with only one provider if you want the line connected.
Call the other company up (eg. Optus) and tel them you want their service. I'm sure they'll make it happen and at a compettitive price. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Connecting the Phone - Do I need to sign up to Telstra? 3Apr 04, 2008 2:20 pm failing that - just sign up for one of their basic plans - no contract type thing, let them hook it up, then disconnect the phone with them and ring optus or whoever. We wanted to get our phone line installed etc, but didn't actually want it "connected" and in use when we first moved in. So telstra told us to connect it up with them, the $300, and then a day or two after it was done, just to ring them and get it disconnected, then re-connected later when we were ready. Re: Connecting the Phone - Do I need to sign up to Telstra? 4Apr 04, 2008 9:22 pm You can call any phone provider to connect your phone service however the fee will still be $299. Telstra will connect it on behalf of the service provider you go with. It was Telstra that had to connect us to the property even tho' the bill was with Optus (apparently they are all Telstra lines). Telstra tried to pull us back with them but we told 'em to take a hike . Sign up with your preferred provider and they will organise for Telstra to do the connection. Re: Connecting the Phone - Do I need to sign up to Telstra? 7Apr 05, 2008 1:36 pm Wow Blackmax, you must be getting excited! Do you have a handover date yet?
We were in the same situation and as previous posters have said, you can choose which telephone company you want, but the fee remains the same. rldragon2003 this price only includes one line (but as many points as you have in your house). If you want another line, you pay another (reduced fee). We built our dream home on acreage nearly a year ago. House #2 with Adenbrook and we love it! Does the $299 include one phone point? im sure it does, but the phone provider should tell you, however you need to ensure your Lead in cable is complete before the technician attends. (lead in cable is the cable from the boundary point to your house- this is usually done with the process of building a house as long as it is part of your building contract) Re: Connecting the Phone - Do I need to sign up to Telstra? 9Apr 11, 2008 10:36 am Would the $299 be for the Lead in cable?. We pay $90 to the builder for two phone points, builder will connect them to a junction box outside the house, where the Phone company will connect the cable to the junction box from the boundary. Re: Connecting the Phone - Do I need to sign up to Telstra? 10Apr 13, 2008 11:00 am Nope the $299 doesnt cover your lead in cable. If there is a junction box on the side of your house it usually means your lead in cable has been done as well. but it is best to check just to avoid any surprises when you try to get the phone connected. The way the phone companies see it is that the Lead in cable is on your land which means it is your extra money and your responsibilty to get it installed before they come to complete the connection. From my understanding the $299 charge is for the techs time etc plus the physical line from the boundary point to the exchange.
