Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 11, 2009 12:34 pm Hi folks and a happy & safe Easter to all. In considering changing my floor plan fron 2 back to back WIR to 2 sliding door type robes. It will be the full length of the room. They will be 3.6 meters long in both rooms as they back on to each other. Im having so bother with the doors, I was thinking of 3 870 doors = 2610mm. Plus they need to over lap say 30 or 40mm each in the track. Will this look out of place as its a long built in robe, I may even have to put 4 doors in it. What are your ideas & opinions. I think the walk in waist a bit of storage space as you take up space where you stand inside it. WIR ORIGINAL.jpg WIR SLIDING DOORS.jpg My concerns are: What size doors will allow me to do this, 3 or 4 doors, I would like 3 only. How deep should I make the robe, whats standard? I was thinking 400 to 500mm deep. If I can get it the full length of the room I may have to have 300-500 mm at each end of the doors covered with plaster, but I should still be able to reach in behind it from the door. Whats you thourghts & ideas about this. Thank & Regards to all. KW............. Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 2Apr 11, 2009 1:20 pm King willy, I think what you propose to do is better use of space for minor bedrooms. I vote in favour. The main advantage of WIR's IMO is the ability to get to your clothes without waking your partner by turning the main light on, obviously this is not an issue in minor bedrooms unless 2 people are sharing a room. The shelf space in our BIR's is 450mm deep and then another 150mm from edge of shelf to outside of outer sliding door - ie total depth required = 600mm. Blimey, that tape meaasure of mine has been put to use answering forum questions lately Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 3Apr 11, 2009 1:22 pm I like the idea of the long built in wardrobes for these rooms instad of walk in. I love WIRs for master bedrooms, but they are usually much bigger and make sense in a space next to an ensuite (for example). these little ones do seem to waste space and you'd get much more storage in the long ones you're proposing. have you thought about using hinged doors instead of sliding? or maybe you said that in your post (i got a little lost in all the measurements etc). if you had three hinged doors, or four small hinged doors, wouldn't you have easy access to all the internal space with only a very small blank space near the walls to allow for the hinges? Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 4Apr 11, 2009 3:50 pm I had the triple sliding door scenario you are thinking of changing to in my last house. To be honest I would have preferred the WIR option that you currently have on the plan. With the sliding doors there are always 2 small sections that you cannot quite get to easily and you cannot dump a large item on the floor like you can with the WIR option. My new house does not have the layout to have the WIR option in the other bedrooms and I have already found something I intended storing in the cupboard that will not fit in and will have to stay out in the room taking up valuable floor space. Sorry but I am going to go against the grain and vote for the WIR option. Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 5Apr 11, 2009 4:18 pm I would be comparing hanging space over anything else. Whichever gives you the most hanging space would be the one I choose. We have a large dressing room and our daughter has a walk in robe (because of the space) whilst our son and spare rooms have large built ins. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 6Apr 11, 2009 5:20 pm The original WIRs do waste quite a bit of space. I'd go for the room-length built-ins, but with ordinary doors rather than sliding ones (I'd use 4 doors for that length). It will be easier to access the contents and it would look nicer. Judie Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 7Apr 11, 2009 5:24 pm I think sliding doors look neater and are more practical, you don't lose space opening into the room like hinged doors and a hinged door would be a problem behind the door in Bed 3. Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 8Apr 11, 2009 5:29 pm Definately go for the sliding doors over the WIR. Surely you'll get much more actual storage space than the WIR? That spot you stand uses up heaps of space, and if you can fit a WIR in, I'd imagine standard built in robes will be relatively deep? Re: Built in or Walk in Robles ????? 9Apr 11, 2009 5:32 pm Having had walk in robes before I decided to go with built in robes with sliding doors for my own house. The amount of space it can offer takes up much less room than having comparable amount of space in a walk in robe, that is my opinion anyway. This is what I have in my house in all the minor bedrooms. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Mine also are the length of the room and are also quite deep, more than enough space for two adults to walk into. I know because I walked into it with my brother. Built with Commodore Homes - The Fusion completed April 2009 (with modifications) Yes I have moved! You get more wall space in the room itself to place furniture. Creates more options for furniture placement in the room. You can store things on the floor of the robe that you may not fit on the floor in the normal built-ins. Think a big dolls house, boys toys etc, etc. I did jigsaw puzzles as kid. Would have loved a space to put it off the bedroom floor when I wasn't going to work on it for a couple of days. If it is ever going to be used for a guest room and there will be two people in it... much nicer to have the WIR. The floor space isn't actually "wasted" in the WIR... with a mirror on the flat wall it becomes a little dressing area. The "dead" wall can also have smaller things hanging from it. The space makes it easier to see everything and find every thing. I'd go WIR every time. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Great minds think alike! I'm also doing the same. Built with Commodore Homes - The Fusion completed April 2009 (with modifications) Yes I have moved! Ah but can you have a desk in there? And most kids like a piece of furniture in their room with their "stuff" on top... I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I hadn't thought of this. it's true that wall space, especially in kids' rooms since they accumulate so much stuff, is a valuable asset. now i don't know which I'd prefer! I have no idea what a roble is, but if it's for the house I must need one! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself.
