Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Aug 04, 2013 7:22 pm Hi I am a typical handy man, which loves to build and renovate (and DIY if possible) I am just about to install a wood heater in my lounge room, the issue i have struck is the flue from the ceiling to the roof! I understand that the main flue (6") must have a outer flue over the top of the main flue for fire reasons. This should have been a relatively easy install until i realized that the flue was heading straight for the colourbond roof gable join. I dont have much room to work in. from ceiling to roof gable is approx 50mm, i have to move the flue to the left of the gable approx another 50 mm My question is, does the main flue HAVE to be insulated or can i just use (2) 45 deg elbow joiners and take straight out the roof and finish with the flue cap? or use a flexible flue, i can not figure out how i would be able to insulate these ideas. Any help would be appreciated Darren Re: Wood Heater Flue help needed 4Aug 05, 2013 10:55 pm Yes! You need to have a double (or even better triple) flue all the way to bottom of the roof penetration. The flue can get very hot and can easily ignite roof timbers/trusses through radiant heat. There is some guidance here - http://downsheating.com.au/?page_id=1458 - but you should probably purchase a copy of AS 2918 or get a professional to assist. Perhaps you could use angle bends inside the house before you penetrate the ceiling so as to avoid the roof valley. Also, be aware that if you are coming out near the valley (a low point on your roof) you need to ensure the appropriate flue height - 1000mm if you are further than 3m from the high point or 600mm above the high point if you are less than 3m - this height may need some additional bracing. 0 1641 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Hi everyone Question about Brevis gas heating undergound - was recently installed by previous owners (<1 year old) but live in a relatively large house - 4 bdr - and only… 0 6682 My Electrical roughing is going on.
