Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 02, 2016 1:23 pm Hi First post here. We inherited a delightful 30 year old bathroom and shower room when we moved in to the family farm house a few years ago. The tiles are about to fall off the wall in the shower so we've reprioritised the reno's and bumped up the wet areas!! A bit of background - the house was built in 1904 with what is now the "wet areas" (and kitchen) built in 1953 from the original verandah. We are on a farm in rural WA. This means that any money we spend on the house doesn't add $ value to the property, it does however add value to our every day life and we plan on being here for many many years. Which is why we do NOT want to screw this up We also don't want a style that will date a lot. We want something clean and fresh looking, practical (we have very young kids) but also that ties in with the heritage of the house. We will not be moving any plumbing or walls as they're 3ft stone walls. We have 3 rooms, all next to each other along a hallway. A toilet, a shower room (1.3 x 1.9m) and a bathroom (1.8 x 2.5m). We want neutral and light colours as natural light is a bit iffy (tiny windows!). I'm concerned that large tiles will NOT make the rooms seem bigger but will in fact look oversized hence drawing attention to the "pokiness" of the rooms. But I'm equally concerned that smaller tiles might give a cluttered look that we are desperate to get away from. The lady in the tile shop thought patterned tiles (in muted grey/charcoal) on the floor with white subway tiles for the walls would look great. I loved the idea but worry that they might be too busy and too gimmicky. If we go the traditional route and get federation style tessellated floor tiles (thinking white with the little black squares) it would a) cost a bomb and b) I'm not sure I love it or that it fits the "clean and fresh" bill as I feel we'll need to have more traditional fittings to go with it). We have hard water here so there will be a buildup. I know I will be on to it and clean more thoroughly more regularly than what my predecessors did but it is still a consideration I think with colour of tiles at least. The bath will be replaced but still built in, the mirrored cabinet in the window will stay (new door!) but I'm thinking of putting a small vanity or a pedestal where the sink is and in the other corner a floor to ceiling (or thereabouts) cupboard for storage. This will minimise the bench aka clutter space. In the shower room, I'm hoping to remove the shower screen completely and the little step so it is all a proper wet room. I think this will help make it feel less cramped, and will make it easier to use as the swing door takes up most of the room! I'd love to see photos of small bathroom areas in older houses that are modernised but still fit with the age of the house and/or hear your thoughts. And also any thoughts on the storage/vanity situation as it's the only change to layout we will do. I'll try figure out how to add some pics Thanks in advance! Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room. There is a hallway/entry that is never used, so was thinking this could be an option. Thank you for your thoughts 0 10457 |
