Wainscoting - where to buy?

This is my first post in this forum so hopefully it works well!

I have recently purchased a home with a bathroom that needs to be gutted and re done.


Does anyone know if wainscoting can be bought in Australia? It may have a different name here...

Wainscoting if done well in the right place and using a nice profile can look very sexy. An ordinary hallway fitted out like this can suddenly look quite grand.
I've seen halls done with the same kind of panel as the kitchen doors too which helps to unify the interior design of a house ( not sure if that is what you are trying to achieve ).
If you are talking about standard wainscoting like you show then it is not true panels but shiplap or T & G board with skirting , a cap rail and crown moulding that basically anyone can buy and install piece by piece. If you are taking about raised panel wainscoting like this

then you would probably need a cabinetmaker or joiner to make it then install it.
As far as I know no company sells wainscoting in kit form in Australia although a lot of the elements are standard moulding profiles.
Here's a few samples of how it goes together...
Just substitute the raised panel in the middle with beaded board or shiplap as in your photo etc



We'd like to do this on our curved staircase but given the cost to get the stairs plus wainscoting I'll do it myself ( I'm a chippie by trade ).


If you are looking at doing a "shaker" style bathroom which I think look great then you could match the wainscoting on the walls with the vanity doors and even the bath similar to this

The only member I can think of who has used Wainscoting, was Rikster.

I believe he sourced his panels from QLD (his are plaster, not wood). You'll need to scroll down to the middle of the page:

They use a lot of wall panelling in Queensland homes, but I believe they are called VJ's there. They resemble your first image, Eskimo, whereas Rikster's ones are more the traditional wainscoting Stewie D has pointed out, but in plaster panels.

I'd LOVE to have it up my hallway and in the lounge and dining (always wanted to), but it wasn't an option through my builder.

You may also find some info about what might be available in Australia by having a read through A-M's blog. She built the most amazing Hamptons style home in Queensland a few years ago. Although she didn't use them in her home, there may be some info in the depths of her blog about them.

I ordered some wainscotting from http://www.easycraft.com via Bunnings Warehouse before Christmas, (special order, paid up front). It arrived a month late and every panel was damaged! (combination of internal forklift/bad packaging). It was reordered and arrived after Christmas but we haven't installed it, (trying to decide on height in bedroom application). It is 2.4 mtrs high so we cut all four panels into 8 x 1.2 mtrs pieces, then 1.1 mtrs, still looks too tall in 8' (ceiling height) bedroom! It looks like craftwood panelling, (regency style). We bought the wooden dado strip too, 3.6mtrs long! (they don't sell the base board, so we thought we'd try using our skirting board, as you won't see the bottom in our small bedroom). It cuts great and is pre painted white, (undercoat). We will post photos as soon as we finish it.

I do a lot of wainscoting installs in Sydney, these are mainly Shaker style as pictured below, this is one just completed for a client, and consisted of the hallway, study, media room and main living areas.

I have the timbers made by a local manufacturer, the pattern is decided by the client and custom made to suit.

This one is yet to be painted, and the top half will be wallpapered, it converted a very boring looking hallway into something with style and character.

Yeah they still refer to this specific type of wall panelling in Australia as Wainscoting.

Intrim recommend using Inlay Mould IN23 with Chair Rail CR22 for 18mm wide architraves, and CR99 with IN32 for 30mm architraves. See profiles on this Page
