Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jan 30, 2015 12:31 pm We're in the process of building and it's time to spec out the air cond. It's way past the contract stage and as of today we even have a roof. Our house will include a ducted air cond unit. It can have up to 4 zones relatively comfortably (but only really 1 or 2 zones any one point in time) and up to 9 ducting points. There are only two people and one dog that inhabit the house most of the time. So... we were thinking of getting one in the garage (a duct I mean!) but now I have to think about what insulation there would be. Ceiling is easy we can throw some extra batts in. But what about walls? Is it something that should be done? Or do I need to do a variation or will it not matter anyway as the leakage around the garage door will be terrible? And what about insulating the garage door? Anyone had any experience? Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 2Jan 30, 2015 3:08 pm You can insulate the garage door pretty easily and there are some things you can get to fix the gaps around the edges. I thought about getting an outlet in the garage but didn't in the end. We did insulate the walls though. Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 3Jan 30, 2015 3:13 pm The garage door is well worth doing even if you don't air condition. When I did mine I used foil board which worked really well and didn't cost much. It made the garage much more comfortable to work in, and for my beer fridge. It also made a better buffer zone (http://www.anewhouse.com.au/2012/02/buffer-zones/ )for the rest of the house Although it doesn't weigh much you will probably need to get the sping that helps with the lifting readjusted The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 4Jan 30, 2015 4:51 pm Thanks... yeah I think it's definitely worth doing the insulation as long as it's easy-ish... and from what I can see it seems to be. @Matt1 - did the walls come insulated automatically or was that something you had to explicitly ask for -- or did you DIY? @bashworth is the foilboard readily available in the big box stores (bunnings/masters)? Or should I go thermadoor or some of the other providers? btw talking about beer fridges we're planning on doing a ventilated fridge space and we have under house for any cellaring or brewing Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 5Jan 30, 2015 9:45 pm yvonneh @bashworth is the foilboard readily available in the big box stores (bunnings/masters)? I ordered it from my local Bunnings and it took about 2 weeks to come. It answered a big question. . . What do you pack polystyrene in? . . . More polystyrene! This link shows how I insulated the door: http://www.anewhouse.com.au/2015/02/gar ... nsulation/ The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 7Jan 31, 2015 11:05 am I decided that it's not a good idea to mix garage air with the inside of the house so I am doing separate window air con units built into the brickwork instead. I thought of doing a separate split system but for the size of my garage I can get more cooling power and for a lot less $$ by using 3 separate window units and I can also do a bit of zoning that way. Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 8Jan 31, 2015 12:58 pm Hmmm will it mix if we only have an out duct as that's a really good point I hadn't considered! I really don't want fumes in the house! Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 9Jan 31, 2015 3:38 pm Unless you know the ducted system closes it when it's not on, I think it can mix. I have seals on the door leading into the house too. The concern area for me is summer time when you are not likely to have your windows open much (since you have ducted aircon) and you could get a Carbon Monoxide buildup. 5Kw window aircon units are only $1-1400 so hard to beat for a garage area unless you are into something really special;). My last house was a 3 car garage and a single 5Kw unit did fairly well but I'm going for 3 this time in my bigger garage. Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 10Jan 31, 2015 8:14 pm yvonneh @Matt1 - did the walls come insulated automatically or was that something you had to explicitly ask for -- or did you DIY? We had to upgrade for the internal walls. We put Soundscreen on the back wall because there's a bedroom on the other side and normal insulation on the other wall which borders the hallway. Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 11Jan 31, 2015 11:25 pm If you were concerned with infiltration of CO from the garage when the system wasn't in use, you could get a barometric damper set installed which shuts off the duct when there's no air flow. Just a thought. Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 12Feb 01, 2015 8:30 am Thanks Bels I will look into it. My husband has been talking about a manual shut off as well so that may do it too. I'm not sure how often he'll use it (but know I'll regret it if we don't put it in) . The expression "happy wife happy life" needs to be changed to but I can't think of a suitable word to rhyme with spouse or husband or hubby! To think when we did our knock down we gave our two old window ac units away... We probably won't get a window one since we have an awning window but I suppose we could put it on the external wall (and punch a hole through...) a split could work... But I suppose I'm just cheap and wanted to get something to work that would pretty much be free! Even if we can add it to an existing zone and manually close it that could work. Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 14Feb 01, 2015 11:22 am How are you planning to insulate or air tight space around garage door? I'm very much interested in such solution, need to setup home office for wife post handover. Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 15Feb 01, 2015 10:03 pm I think there are weather strips for this? I have to do a more thorough search but there are things for sale stateside for this so I assume we can get something similar. If not at Bunnings and masters then maybe Clark rubber? I've also seen some kits on ebay... Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 16Mar 15, 2015 5:25 pm Most garage doors in the US have timber frames around them even on brick houses so there are rubber seals you can use that go on the outside of the door. Easy to use these for rendered surfaces as they will be pretty flush, but with standard brick and block there will be gaps. I haven't found anything that's easy to import most of the US seals have rigid pieces the rubber seal is attached to so they bulky. I never liked the nothing we had on my last house so I will probably make something from available loaf all materials. Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 17Mar 27, 2015 9:48 am TBH, I've seen photos of those door seals a mate brought back from the US a few years ago and while they would be effective they sure didn't look pretty from the outside. Mind you their winters are a tad more daunting than ours so I guess anything to help keep your house warm would be worth it. They also seem to use timber garage doors a lot more than we do as well which I think would be easier to seal than our more common pressed metal panels Quote: The expression "happy wife happy life" needs to be changed to but I can't think of a suitable word to rhyme with spouse or husband or hubby! Stewie Re: Garage insulation / Air conditioning 18Nov 14, 2018 12:46 am Honestly, I never installed the air conditioning system in the garage on my own, and I don’t even consider it to be extremely important, but I understand the importance of such a system in the house, in the room, or in other places where you often spend time. Not all air conditioners and air conditioning systems are heavy and bulky. In our time, the technology in this matter has leaped forward, and now the results of the output products delight many customers and consumers. I use the air conditioning system as here, at the same time and get useful tips and recommendations for use.
